Too good for radio!,

This review is from: You Still Touch Me / Lullaby to an Anxious Child (Audio CD)
All four of these songs are amazing! "You Still Touch Me" is an upbeat track included on the album "Mercury Falling". "Twenty-Five to Midnight" is an equally impressive song with a similar tempo. The two remaining tracks on this CD are simply beautiful. "Lullaby to an Anxious Child" implies an almost classical music style with beautifully dark sounding melody. "Pirate's Bride", one of my favorite Sting songs, is arguably the most brilliantly crafted song ever recorded. Every part of the melody is perfect. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of romantic tragedy. A piano adds some classical and jazz subtleties to this beautiful masterpiece.

The best selections seldom heard,

Sometimes I have to wonder who actually decides which selections will comprise an artist's album. You Still Touch Me was on Mercury Falling. What I can't figure is why the remaining songs on this extended single were not there as well. Recorded at about the same time, they include a tender evening melody, a bucaneer's lament, and a marvelous tale of musician's failure- played in 7. If choices had to be made, any one of these three would have been preferable to so much of the Tennessee-tinged offerings that ultimately found their way onto the larger album. While You Still Touch Me, for example, is enjoyable, it is bathed in the all-too-familiar and unoriginal STAX-Booker T. & the MGs sound; the other songs on this CD, however, are more authentically Sting in character---inventive, sensitive and ironic---and continue the kind of rewarding explorations he so bravely initiated first in Soul Cages, then in Ten Summoner's Tales. As it happens, I discovered this treasure only recently by chance. A stunning gem, its worth has been unforgivably obscured. It deserves to be heard.

The problem I've had with Sting over the years is that the music which is chosen for radio airplay is oftenly inadequate representations of his best work. What we have in this instance makes even less sense. Here we have a few of the finest songs Sting has ever written appearing as "B-side" tunes on a very hard-to-find CD single, and it's the only way you'll ever hear these songs because they don't even appear on any of his regular albums! I am obviously referring to the songs "Lullaby To An Anxious Child" and "The Pirate's Bride".
Thank you for the music, Sting, but why do you sometimes throw your best music away???

A fine edition to Mercury Falling,

Although "You Still Touch Me" is _the_ R&B hit off of Mercury Falling, it is the "extras" on this single that make it worthwhile to own. "Lullaby to an Anxious Child" is a very sweet tune cowritten by Sting and Dominic Miller. "Pirate's Bride" showcases the talents of Kenny Kirkland. Sting hasn't written a piece so lush and reminiscent of the sea since the Soul Cages album. This track would have been a better addition to Mercury Falling than "Valparaiso". The "25 to Midnight" track was included in the foreign issues of Mercury Falling, and its absence from the US release is a mystery to me. It would have helped make a good album a very good album.

I'm always in search of Sting songs that I have yet to hear, so when I came across this CD I was very excited. When I played the CD my excitement was met with the soothing and melodic voice of Sting combined with very eloquent lyrics that only he could write. This CD is very worthwhile if you are in the mood to relax and and let your mind wander. In short, if you like the music of Sting, you'll love this CD.

I love B sides from an album. They always give you insight into the artists thoughts. Since we don't always get the full line up in the U.S. I'm thrilled to find so called singles to go with albums that I have purchased. The Pirates Bride is one of the most beautiful soulful songs Sting has ever written, and you have got to feel so moved by these thoughts in this song. Lulluby To An Anxious Child, a collaboration with Dominic Miller, is almost an apology to a child for the world being not quite right and is also truly beautiful. Twenty Five To Midnight rocks and almost sounds autobiographical if you have ever read Stings book Broken Music. You Still Touch Me definetly
not a B side and a mild hit on Mercury Falling. It is also a wonderful song with fantastic lyrics and Romantic as ever. You won't be sorry with this 4 song single it's worth every bit as much as the rest of the album.

If you're not into Sting's singles, you're missing out on some of his best work. These outtakes from Mercury Falling might have been left out of the album because of their "uncommercial" appeal, but they are great songs. I'm hopping for a day when a box set of somekind is released with all of the "b sides", side-work, collaborations, soundtrack projects etc. Worth searching for this and more singles like it.

I agree with the reviewer below - this release of a single (from Mercury Falling) containing no less than three previously unreleased songs is stunning. The Pirates' Bride is a new favorite of mine, though very anonymous because of its' rareness. Lullaby is beautiful, and the "upbeat" feelgood-song named Twenty Five To Midnight (contained on the European-release of Mercury Falling) rocks good as well! Great disc, yes, with hidden treasures - recommended!

I first heard "The Pirate's Bride" several years ago while driving home late one night. It's haunting lyrics and piano accompaniment moved me so - I couldn't forget it! I searched for six months to find this CD, since it was not on the "Mercury Falling CD. Now that's it's easily avaible through Amazon, I've bought a copy for special friends. Two of the other three remaining songs on the single are also not on Mercury Falling, (which in my opinion, would have been a MUCH better release if these songs were included!) This single showcases Sting at his best. You won't be disappointed.
