3.0 out of 5 stars Great Artist, Mediocre Album
Love Matt Nathanson, I think he is great in concert. I have no doubt that he will continue to gain popularity on the music scene. However, this album is poorly produced with cheesy background vocals. Do yourself a favor, save the 20 bucks, buy a ticket to his concert, or better yet wait for his new album to come out.

He's also not a "kid" - he's been around for years, making numerous amazing records on independent labels. You really believe him when he sings, he's got conviction and credibility. He's mature, experienced, and amazing. Check him out!

4.0 out of 5 stars Let Still Waiting For Spring be your first, October 31, 2002

My friends and family know how much I love music that isn't killed by the radio so when my sister-in-law gave me Ernst by Matt Nathanson I was ready for a something new. I'm glad she did. After hearing Ernst, I went to ...com to see what else was out there. I now own all of his albums.

Still Waiting for Spring is a great collection of his work. It's simple but it's also good to pop in the CD player for a drive. His music isn't to the level of DMB or John Mayer but he's getting there. You can see the potential. If you were to buy a CD to get the idea of Matt, then this is the one. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Prediction--2003 is Gonna be Matt's Year to Truly SHINE, January 9, 2003

I have been listening to Matt for about 3 years now. This is one of my favorite CD's of his. Little Victories has pretty much turned into my theme song. Matt was on tour recently after release of his newest CD.."When Everything Meant Everything". I live in Michigan and he doesn't make it to the Midwest that often so I flew down to see him perform at the University of Florida. If you think Matt is good...wait until you can catch him LIVE. HE IS AWESOME!! If you are a fan of John Mayer, Howie Day or Ari Hest--you will love Matt! ...

5.0 out of 5 stars This kid's good, July 15, 2002

When you listen to this CD for the first time, you will be in awe. The first thing you will think will be 'WOW, this kid is good". Next, you'll be asking yourself "How is this kid not HUGE!?" It's that good. Each song is layered beautifully, and the lyrics have been crafted with intricate detail by Matt. Born in Boston, a great singer/songwriter birthplace, and moved to San Francisco, a great musician's city (gave birth to the likes of the Counting Crows, etc.) He was destined for glory. Matt has been writing songs since he can remember, and it definitely stands out as one of his best talents. Oh yeah, did I mention he can play the hell out of a 12-string? This CD features David Immergluck of the Counting Crows on the electric guitar, pedal steel etc. and the result is an amazing collaboration between two great talents that make one incredible record. This kid's gonna be huge, can't wait for his new album to come out! I'd say definitely buy this, it's spectacular. Put Howie Day to shame in concert too!

5.0 out of 5 stars So glad to have found him...., August 29, 2003

I heard Matt almost three years ago at CBGB in New York. My roommate and I were there to listen to another singer, but we stuck around for Matt's set. OH MY GOD were we glad we did! We have been big fans ever since and wish he would make his way East more often! I was thrilled to hear about the American Pie song - I hope that the exposure will bring Matt the recognition he deserves. I have all of Matt's albums and I play this one constantly. I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone and everyone. I also suggest you try to catch Matt live - he's so great!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Listen to this Guy!, December 5, 2001

If you ever get the chance, go see Matt live! He is one performer that sounds as good in person as he does on the CD. I saw him at my school in San Diego at a coffeehouse, and Matt was incredible. He was friendly, funny, and sooo nice! He joked with the audience about himself, his experiences, people in the crowd, and whatever else he wanted to say. Definitely the best part about Matt is his personality (and he has obvious talent as well). I bought the "Spring" CD after seeing him, and knowing the basis to some of the songs, I really enjoy it. It may sound like the typical i've-been-dumped/i-miss-her type lyrics at first, but keep listening because his talent makes up for it. And some of his newer stuff is straying from those kind of lyrics anyway. Matt is not afraid to be himself, which shows through in not only his communication with his audiences, but in his content. He doesn't use a lot of profanity, which is becoming rare; he uses some catchy refrains; and he uses his real life for the inspirations for his music. Oh, and "Dawson's Creek" liked him enough to use him for an episode. (...)

5.0 out of 5 stars Spring is Here, November 16, 2001

This review is from: Still Waiting For Spring (Audio CD)
Sometimes life hands you lemons and even if you try to make lemonade with them, it comes out tasting more like lemon Pledge. And sometimes wonderful things happen to you when you aren't looking for them, sometimes when you aren't even paying attention.

I recently gave a friend tickets to a Dar Williams concert at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco. Though I'm not a huge fan, I like Dar, so I was in a pretty good humor that night, made better by the company I was keeping. There wasn't supposed to be an opening act that night, so I was surprised to see the stage lights come up on a rumpled-looking guitarist and his cello-playing accompanist.

The guitarist launched into a heartrending pop tune about the vagaries of love gone wrong, or maybe it was love gone right with a girl gone bad. Regardless, I was captured and dragged along for the rest of the guy’s set. In between songs, he kept things lively by deconstructing his own songs and talking to the audience. He was funny; he was smart. He was an amazing entertainer. The fellow turned out to be Matt Nathanson and his cellist was Matt Fish, the most rockin’ cellist in the biz, for my money.

I bought Still Waiting for Spring on the basis of this one show, in the hope that he had been able to capture in the studio the magic he had cast onstage that night. On the CD, Matt’s music is, obviously, more polished, richer. There are more musicians, which offer a greater texture to his compositions. Lyrically he treads no new ground, but then, for the last thousand years or so, who has? Vocally, Matt has an intense, boyish passion not unlike that of relative newcomer Pete Yorn, oldtimer Elliott Smith or late prodigy Nick Drake.

After listening to the CD in its entirety, I wrote to the friend with whom I had seen the concert and summed it up thus: “Matt Nathanson is a bitter, bitter boy.” In my book, though, this is high praise, as I tend to revel in the vagaries of love gone wrong and girls gone bad. If you, too, have a penchant for emotional pain set to zesty pop melodies, you should give Matt Nathanson a try. In fact, Matt’s such a great entertainer you should give him a try even if others’ emotional pain gives you hives.

4.0 out of 5 stars More Than This, September 28, 2005
This review is from: Still Waiting For Spring (Audio CD)
As much as I would like to praise this album, as I did with "Beneath These Fireworks", this one deserves a different view. A much less experienced Matt Nathanson is in the spot-light in this case, but a Nathanson non the less; he still shines, he's still brilliant, he's still an easy sell.

A diamond in the rough - one of the best song-writers will always be worth the buy. Although I would suggest to start off with "Beneath These Fireworks", just so you fall completely for Matt Nathanson, before you begin to judge him.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy This Album, April 11, 2003

This review is from: Still Waiting For Spring (Audio CD)
Matt Nathanson will absolutely blow you away. I picked up this disk because Charlie and Immy from the Counting Crows helped Matt on this album. You can hear the same jaw-dropping precisions in Still Waiting For Spring that you hear in all of the Counting Crows albums. Matt's lyrics are heart-felt and honest. The music is powerful and compliments the lyrics wonderfully.

The album starts out with the song "Wings" that in concert he says is his ode to all the beautiful girls that he can not reach -- like Natalie Portman and Skakira. The song "Loud" was featured on Dawson's Creek. "Answering Machine" is a catchy song about a relationship gone wrong. The last song "Little Victories" is a powerful and motivational song.

The ten songs on this disk leaves you wishing for more. The good thing is that there is more. Matt has four other independently released CDs! And he just got done finishing his first major label record.

If you enjoy the wave of singer-songwriters that are starting to grow in popularity, do yourself a favor and pick up Still Waiting For Spring by Matt Nathanson. You will not be disappointed.

I have been listening to Matt for three years now. He is one of my all-time favorite artists. Matt was on tour recently in December after the release of his newest CD "When Everything Meant Everything". I live in Michigan, and was so excited to hear that he was going to be touring, that I flew to Florida to catch his show at the University of Florida. If you get a chance to see him...definitely do. He is an awesome performer...
