Remember History or Be Doomed,
By DJ (Salinas, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: And Still We Sing: The Outspoken Collection (MP3 Download)
Given the progress women have made over the last 20-30 years some of the songs sound archaic and improbable. But those of us that lived through it remember how it was. Song #27-Fight Back was an anthem for our annual "Take Back the Night" marches. Let's not forget how it was, and how it could be again if we let down our guard.
"Some have an easy answer. Buy a lock and live in a cage. But my fear is turning to anger. And my anger is turning to rage. And I won't live my life in a cage"

Fabulous, five songs alone are worth the price,

This review is from: And Still We Sing: The Outspoken Collection (Audio CD)
A long time ago, I drifted away from folk music, losing both my six-string and twelve-string guitars along the way. So it was with great joy that I heard Holly Near's song "Hay Una Mujer Desaparecida" on the PBS special on the Weavers, "Wasn't that a time?" So of course I immediately logged onto to Amazon to check out this album. And what a gem it is. Five songs alone are worth the price: the haunting "Hay Una Mujer Desaparecida," the marvelous "Fired Up" ("Fired up, ain't gonna take it no more/Tied up, ain't gonna take it no more/You say cool down, we say step down/You're breakin' my mother's heart/Shame, shame")and "I Ain't Afraid" ("I ain't afraid of your Yaweh/I ain't afraid of your Allah/I ain't afraid of your Jesus/I'm afraid of what you're doing in the name of your god." Good reason to be afraid.), "Voices" ("Listen to the voices of the Indian Nations"), and a new and surprising approach to an old standard, "Make Me a Pallet on the Floor." Holly Near sings with that old stand-up-and-be-counted righteous indignation that makes you want to go out and change the world for the better. Don't expect timidity or gentility; Holly Near is passionate about what she believes in and she makes her listeners passionate as well. Before you buy the album, listen to the song samples. This is the same old-time protest spirit passed down from the likes of Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, The Weavers, and so many more. If you're my age, it will take you back to your youth; if you're young, it's something you should hear. Either way, you'll be inspired.

I AINT AFRAID,

This review is from: And Still We Sing: The Outspoken Collection (Audio CD)
Holly Near's singing, the beat of the drum, and the lyrics to I Aint Afraid is one cut I would strongly recommend. I haven't listened to her work in years, but I will buy this cd just for that one song, even if the cd were not so good.
