Earthquakes and fires and shipwrecks,

The title of this book refers to a telegram sent by Fireman's Fund to its various managers three days after the 1906 earthquake. That the Fireman's Fund was not itself destroyed, as its headquarters and records were in the ensuing fire, is one of the great stories of insurance industry history.
Six of Arnold Genthe's photos of the fire and its aftermath have been reprinted from proofs in the Library of Congress. Also reprinted is a cartoon drawn by Enrico Caruso of himself being taken to the Ferry Building after the Quake. The book contains many other photos of great nautical and fire disasters, with a special emphasis on California. All in all great fun and not a bad read. |
