W.A.S.P.'s Best Live Album,
By Joseph Adams "brother" (Superior, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sting (Dig) (Audio CD)
This album released at the beginning of this deacade is the best live album of the band's long career. The accompanying DVD and this CD give the fan enough material to see why W.A.S.P. was so controversial- the offensiveness of their songs and the gruesome live stage show. I, however, am against the now defunct PMRC. If the PMRC never existed and didn't sticker albums, music would be much like it was in the 60s and 70s- small time family entertainment the whole family could sit down and enjoy. I love most of W.A.S.P.'s music, though their more recent stuff this deacade has been toned down from even Helldorado, but the music isn't getting in the way of their theatrics any more and the music now longer very shocking because Emenem's outright real life sexism gave metal a much needed boost, as I guess rap came and went. You can get kicked out of college for listening to rap, but they don't care about heavy metal any more. The quality of the live sound recording is about what I expected for a release in the year 2000- you can easily pick out the lyrics but the instruments are not as polished but still very recognizable. Unlike Danzig's horrible year 2000 live album, featuring a double live CD taken from 4 different venues with only a few tracks each venue and the quality of the live recording was just wretched. If you're new to W.A.S.P., I would recommend this live album to get you started, then their self titled debut, Still Not Black Enough and Double Live Assasins. I started liking W.A.S.P. with Double Live Assassins, a savage raw live album that had the guitars sounding like chainsaws. This is from one live gig on the Helldorado tour, an album that was on a level with K.F.D.- didn't bring in many new fans, but tried to recapture the magic of their 80s output after trying to become legitimate musicians with The Headless Children, The Crimson Idol, and Still Not Black Enough. I may have over rated this CD at 5 stars for a supposed total 90s sell out has beens metal band, but W.A.S.P. are big all over the world and this is easily the best live album of their career, I will say better than Kiss Alive 1, 2 and 4 but not better than KISS Alive 3. Only because W.A.S.P. with a string of solid output this decade are suddenly now fresh and competitive worldwide and a revamped live stage show on tour is the magic that this album captures excellently. Hell yeah!
