Folks - I've written a fair number of Amazon reviews on everything from watch bands to saw blades. I call it like I see it. I try to research a lot when I buy online, so I'm usually very pleased. On occasion though, things are not so good, and this is one of those times.

I did not buy this product from Amazon. I got it at a local "big box" home improvement store.

I am somewhat allergic to mosquit bites. Didn't used to be, but something in the last fifteen years or so... when I get bit, I really get a good itchy welt. Saw this product at the big box store, and took a chance on it.

Set it up inside a large outdoor space, under a patio roof, adjacent to the french doors at the back of the house. Worked pretty well for three days. On day four, I had the lamp on, but the grid voltage was zero, and I mean ZERO, as measured with my Fluke meter.

So I took it back to the big box, who refunded me. I bought another.

Unit #2 died - same issues, light no grid, after less than 8 hours use.

Miffed, I took that one back.

Thing is - when it zaps, it zaps the livin' daylights outta bugs. I really liked that.... so I bought a third unit.

It died in two days.

Took that one back to the big box, got a third refund, and didn't buy another. They say that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Enough for me... I'm back to citronella candles and deet.

I'm sort of sad over all this... it worked REALLY well when it worked. I just wish it would keep on working. The top of the unit houses the circuitry - and its not accessable.. so I cant say what the real cause of failure is.

I think I have finally found an inexpensive alternative to my broken Mosquito Magnet Defender (MMD). After a couple of years of using my MMD, countless bottles of propane, attractant cartridges, CO2 cartridges for cleaning and a $50 transformer when I ran over the power chord with the lawn mower, it finally died. I initially went with the MMD because it was scientifically verified to be very selective in killing only mosquitoes and not beneficial insects like beetles and large moths. This was very important to me. Yesterday I picked up a Stinger BK300 and set it up just as instructed. I hung it from a bird feeder "shepherd's hook" and installed the octenol attractant. It was located on a brick patio so I could identify the kills the next morning. I could see and hear the zapping every few seconds. The next morning, the kill pile consisted of at least a couple of hundred mosquitoes, one biting fly and one small moth. I was impressed. I will monitor the kills over the next few days. The only possible con could be the bulb life span. I will give an update if it fails to last the year the manufacturer says it should.

The first one that I bought died within a couple of days, and would no longer zap. Inspecting it, I could see two round rings (one top and one bottom) of possibly resistors that separate the grids. There were about 4 of these that were burnt and shorting out the grid. I exchanged it for a new one at the home improvement store. The 2nd unit appears to be re-designed. Instead of resistors, it appears to be possibly ceramic bars separating the grids. This unit has been working for a week now, and has put a noticeable dent in the mosquitos. The first night, it was zapping about 8 times a minute. So that's about 5000 bugs in one night. Now it's down to about one zap per minute, since there are fewer bugs. Perhaps one reason these go bad so soon, is that they get overworked in the first week until the bug population is thinned out.

DO NOT BUY ONLINE. Due to failures, buy at your local store so that you can do a quick exchange or return.

I bought my first one at Lowes. It worked for about 2 weeks...BIG pile of dead bugs. I would go on the back deck and it would zap about every 5-15 secs. Then one night no more zapping although the light was on. I took it down and looked at it and all the plastic insulations (there are 2 rows of them that encircle the electric grid) on the bottom row was melted. So I took it back to Lowes and got my money back. I went to Walmart and found the same one again and took a chance. Same deal. Worked for about a week with the above results...then one evening I went out and it was constantly zapping. I took a closer look and watched as a plastic insulator melted into slag. I unplugged it to avoid a possible fire hazard and took it back to Walmart. Pay for what you get I guess.

This is a good product the really kills the mosquito's. It is nice to be able to sit out side in the evenings without getting eaten alive. I get more mosquito's in this then I was expecting. Having one in the front and back really helps as I live near a swamp' and was unable to go outside with out the use of nasty chemicals. Better for me and the environment.
