Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4–Megan McDonald shifts the focus from the title character in her popular Judy Moody series of books to Judy's seven-year-old brother, Stink, in this novel (Candlewick, 2006). Stink purchases a gigantic jawbreaker that he thoroughly enjoys through its diminishing size and exotic flavors, but realizes that it didn't fulfill its promise because his jaw is still intact. He writes a letter of complaint to the company and is astounded when he receives ten pounds of jawbreakers as compensation. His success encourages him to write similar letters to three other companies, and he receives goodies from them all. After his parents forbid him to write any more letters, his attention turns to an upcoming pajama day at school. Pajama problems and the realization that he missed his best friend's birthday party due to his letter writing obsession make the dress down event a disaster. Stinks father comes to the rescue with an idea that repairs a friendship and teaches Stink an important lesson. Nancy Cartwright assumes a distinct, childlike voice for each youngster. This engaging, versatile beginning chapter book will have a multitude of uses in the classroom, such as motivating students at the beginning of a letter writing unit or during a lesson on idioms (since Stink learns about idioms at school and uses them throughout the book).–Carol Y. From Booklist

Gr. 2-4. Stink discovers the power of the pen when he writes a letter of complaint to the manufacturer of a disappointing jawbreaker and receives a 10-pound box of the candies in response. The flurry of correspondence continues with more complaint letters, a thank-you note, and, eventually, a written apology. Like big sister Judy Moody, Stink sports a memorable name and a talent for self-expression. His predicaments and triumphs have a childlike air, and the quick-witted dialogue will keep readers entertained. The idioms that Stink learns in his classroom, such as "strike a deal" and "cost an arm and a leg" (36 of them are listed on the book's last page) seem a little less credible, though teachers doing units on idioms or letter writing may find the book an appealing adjunct to the curriculum. With large print, an attractive format, and an eye-catching cover, the second book in the Stink series will attract its share of readers who are just getting comfortable with chapter books. 10 THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT ME

10. The first book I ever wrote was about a hermit crab, inspired by a pet I once owned.

9. My favorite color is purple.

8. I love to read mysteries. When I was Judy's age, I read all 56 classic Nancy Drew books . . . in order! Jeepers!

7. I used to collect scabs so I could examine them under the microscope that I got for my 8th birthday.

6. My four sisters and I often made up our own language, which included the words "Hoidi Boidi", "oogey", "retzel crummypuss" and "poony-poony".

5. My favorite TV show is JEOPARDY!

4. To research my Sisters Club book, THE RULE OF THREE, I toured San Francisco in search of the ultimate cupcake. The winner: Sleepless in San Francisco. Think chocolate + coffee.

3. When I was a kid, I fell down a hill from chasing the ice-cream truck and had to get stitches.

2. When I was a librarian, I used to tell stories in sign language. That's how I got the expression "same-same" for Judy.

1. I share a birthday (February 28) with a famous princess, race car driver and gangster, a Rolling Stone, a French tightrope walker, and a winning racehorse named Smarty Jones.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun and easy read for kids, May 31, 2006
By
STINK AND THE INCREDIBLE SUPER-GALACTIC JAWBREAKER is the second story centered on Judy Moody's younger brother Stink.

Stink Moody buys a huge jawbreaker at the candy store and sucks on it until his tongue is as blue as a skink. When the jawbreaker doesn't break his jaw, he writes a letter of complaint to the candy company. Much to his surprise, he receives a 10-pound box of jawbreakers in return. Stink is so excited that he begins a letter-writing campaign to see if he can get more free stuff.

But Stink is so preoccupied with letter writing that he hardly notices that his best friend, Webster, is mad at him. It takes Stink a while to figure out why Webster is so angry. Could it have something to do with the crumpled envelope he finds? Will he be able to patch things up with his friend? It will take a little creativity.

Megan McDonald is the author of the popular Judy Moody series as well as STINK: The Incredible Shrinking Kid. She got the idea for Stink's latest adventure by watching two kids in the candy section of the grocery store. They were in awe of giant, confetti-flecked jawbreakers. McDonald knew Stink would want one.

STINK AND THE INCREDIBLE SUPER-GALACTIC JAWBREAKER is a chapter book that young kids can really sink their teeth into. As an added bonus, the author has scattered idioms throughout the book. And at the end of the story is a list of idioms that the reader can hunt for.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Stink and the Incredible Super-Galactic Jawbreaker (Book #2) (Paperback)
I am an 8 year old girl. This is a book about a boy named Stink. He has blond hair. He earned $5. He went to a candy store. He bought a jawbreaker. It looked tasty. But it didn't break his jaw! So he complained to the company. So he got 2,082 jawbreakers for free. My favorite part was when he got free jawbreakers.
I like it because it's interesting. Every page is a surprise. I wish it was longer. I recommend it because it's a crowd-pleaser. I think everyone will like it. It's a really awesome book.
