This review is from: Stink and the World's Worst Super-Stinky Sneakers (Book #3) (Hardcover)
My sons (8 and 11) both enjoyed this book quite a bit, so I read it myself. At first, I was put off by the awkwardly edited sentences, but as the book went on I realized that the story was pretty good, the characters inviting, and the computer-drawn pictures lively.
Due to the choppiness of the sentences I won't read this aloud to my students in 2nd grade, but I will certainly add it to my class library and recommend it to some less-advanced readers who are eager to tackle a chapter book.

Stink is as happy as a pig in slop.,

This review is from: Stink and the World's Worst Super-Stinky Sneakers (Book #3) (Hardcover)
Stink is as happy as a pig in slop. He and his friends, Webster and Sophie, are on a class field trip at the science museum --- and the exhibit is called "Gross-Me-Out: The Wonderful World of Smelly Stuff." Stink starts with the giant nose, where he gets to gawk at enormous nose hairs and learn how boogers are made. He loves it!
But when Stink's teacher, Mrs. D., dares him to experience the "Everybody Stinks" exhibit, he has to summon up his courage. After all, no one else will even go near it. One whiff of the B.O. scent almost does him in, but he recovers long enough to sniff more smelly odors, including dirt, rotten eggs, skunk scent and perfume. It appears that Stink has a real talent for smelling. He can smell better than anyone else in his class. In addition, he learns tons of smelly facts. At lunch, the kids read flyers about a stinky sneaker contest the museum is putting on. Naturally, Stink must enter. Others are interested as well, so he'll have plenty of competition. At home, Stink demonstrates The Nose and even impresses his big sister, Judy Moody. Stink is confident that his Nose will make him famous someday. When he researches the science of smelling, he finds information about the corpse flower, the world's stinkiest blossom, rumored to smell worse than outhouses, dead elephants and rotten fish. Stink is inspired to create some terribly stinky perfume and sets up a Franken-stink lab. He and Sophie work up a recipe (including toilet water, dead-flower water, pickle juice and more), but he's distracted when Sophie tells him she's planning to compete in the stinky sneaker contest. Stink is determined to win. He's positive that his reeking old sneakers have a great chance to win the competition. But his plan is foiled when Judy deodorizes them with sweetly fragrant powder. What is he going to do? He can't pour anything (like his stinky perfume) in them since the rules say the shoes must stink from being worn. Can his entry be saved? In a startling turn of events, Stink saves the day when misfortune strikes the contest. He also gets to meet a professional smeller who has actually sniffed a corpse flower. It all makes for a happy (or at least smelly) ending. This is another enjoyable book in the Stink series, sure to appeal to young readers (especially to boys who are enthralled with the grosser aspects of life). As always, author Megan McDonald manages to tickle readers' funny bones, slip in a little subtle education and tell a good story. --- Reviewed by Terry Miller Shannon

Review from a 3rd Grader,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Stink and the World's Worst Super-Stinky Sneakers (Book #3) (Paperback)
This is a great book. You should try it. Stink and his class go on a field trip to a smelly museum. He is a very good smeller. When he gets home his sister, Judy, tests him to see if he is a good smeller. Someone in Stink's class says that Stink is going to smell B.O. from the bottles in the museum. All you have to do is put your nose down and smell. I think it is a really good book.

We purchased this book after my husband found it in the children's department. Our son fell in love with the Stink character immediately and wanted more of the books. Unfortunately there are only three published so far, and he is eagerly awaiting the next book. While he doesn't read them by himself yet (5 yrs old) he can't wait for the next chapter. There are enough illustrations to keep his interest and enough character development to let his imagination fly.

My son is 8 and loves this series....personally, I don't like reading them, but they aren't for me. Thankfully he does well enough with these he reads them to himself.
He is 8 years old and definitely has his own opinions on what he wants to read (not any of the hundreds of books his older brother liked...those, like oh, say 35 or so Magic Treehouse books, are dusty on the book shelf...). He likes Captain Underpants, the A to Z Mysteries, Diary of a Wimpy Kid and now the Stink books. He did read some Horrible Harry ones too, but he seems to have moved on from there. His second grade teacher says he reads a grade ahead...and for what it's worth I checked the 'lexile' on this one and it's 610 for those who track that (as a quick peek I noticed the Animorphs, the Boxcar Children, Magic Treehouse and Encyclopedia Brown are in the same general lexile range). In any case, he does love these books and read this one in one sitting on a Saturday afternoon of his own volition. I looked over and there he was, reading away. Definitely a book for the 'win' column! RECOMMENDED JTG

Entertaining and Engaging First Chapter Book,

This review is from: Stink and the World's Worst Super-Stinky Sneakers (Book #3) (Paperback)
The first time my son asked if he could keep reading! My second grader is not the most enthusiastic reader, and up until this point, would only read non-fiction books about snakes and sports. Not entirely a bad thing, but I felt it was also important that he get to know fiction and start reading some chapter books that would encourage reading comprehension. I was so thankful to find Stink! The entire series is great, but "Stinky Sneakers" is especially entertaining. These books are very sweet and focus on friendships and family relationships. The Stink books provide a very gentle start into chapter books with funny illustrations every few pages, larger print and good spacing. After reading all four, my son is ready to move on to more challenging books. We are into Flat Stanley now - another great series, just a step up in difficulty.

These books rock because they are full of illustrations to go along with the funny stories. This story is about Stink's "smell trip" with his class to the smelliest place in the world. Boys love Gross-Me-Out exibits! The author even adds interesting stinky facts like the fact that flies smell with their feet and snakes smell with their tongues. It is hilarious! You should read it!
