Book Description

Peter and Beth had planned to enter Gwennie, their golden retriever, in the dog show at the county fair. But when Gwennie rolls in something stinky at the beach, it looks like (and smells like) she's ruined their chances. The kids, however, aren't ready to give up. They decide their only chance is to take the long way back home, and see if some of their quirky Point No Point neighbors have any ideas for how they can turn their dog back into her typical, sweet smelling self.

If you liked "Stinky Dog," you might also like to read two other "dog" stories by Michael Wenberg: "The Captain's Dog," and "Dognapped."

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet, troublesome Gwennie August 25, 2011

I had to download this story just for that sad, put-upon face on the cover. Couldn't resist. And if you're a dog lover and have ever had a stinky dog, the one who somehow manages to get into everything under the sun, you'll find some joy in this story. At only 130 locations, it's an easy, light-hearted read about twin siblings 'de-stinkifying' their golden retriever, Gwennie, the afternoon before the big County Fair Dog Show. The author even lets us in on Gwennie's thoughts sometimes. I can see reading this to a child, especially if there also just happens to be a sweet, troublesome dog cuddled up, waiting to hear the story as well. This short story is a simple picture of small-town life, that place where life moves more gently and slowly, where neighbor helps neighbor, and where one dog and her bad habits can cause an adventure.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nothing Stinky About This Tale August 28, 2011

Gwennie is a pretty dog. Beautiful enough to win a prize at the fair. On most days, at any rate. But today - the very day of the fair -- Gwennie rolled into something mighty powerful. How will Beth and Peter ever get rid of the stink?

This is a cute short story about the (mostly absurd) advice two kids get on ridding their dog of its stench. The story has no illustrations; it is probably ideal for 3rd - 5th graders (though younger kids might like it being read to them, and older kids might find it a nice, quick distraction). The writing could be more polished, and there are copywriting issues as can be expected of someone who self-published.

If your kid is looking for a quick distraction, you could do worse than this quirky, yet realistic tale.

2.0 out of 5 stars Liked it a lot but VERY short. September 12, 2011

As a last resort reading choice for my daughter's homeschool day, we were drawn to the book cover and the synopsis depicting an adventure that twins and their dog embark on. I felt disappointed that the book was very short. We read it in about 20 minutes. The book's page count wasn't listed and because of the synopsis, I felt this was going to be a lengthy chapter book. The cost of this download contained no value as there were also grammatical errors. For this I have rated the book only 2 stars. My daughter said she liked the book a lot, especially the part about the tomatoes! She would rate it 4 stars!

The kids liked this story. It's not too long to read aloud in one sitting (one long sitting). Fun stuff.

This was a good book. I liked it , because I love dogs.
The only thing I didn't like about the book was it didn't catch me.
I didn't really feel like I wanted to read on but I did.
