5.0 out of 5 stars Colorful, Bright, and Engaging!, October 10, 2008
This review is from: Stinky (Toon) (Hardcover)
Stinky is funny, colorful with a lot of activity on every page, and it teaches an important lesson about friendship and overcoming prejudices without being heavy-handed. Eleanor Davis' book is full of vivid detail--she even includes a map of Stinky's territory and the town that the little boy Nick lives in. There are some great lines that kids repeat over and over again, for example: "mucky mud, slimy slugs and smelly monsters." It's great for a more experienced reader to read alone, or for read alouds with younger children who are still learning how to read independently.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT NEW BOOK!, July 9, 2008
This review is from: Stinky (Toon) (Hardcover)
This new book has both me and my kids laughing at every page. The drawings are not only beautiful, but cute and witty. My son really identifies with the baseball-hat-wearing Nick and asks me, "Mom, can we go to the swamp and find Stinky?" The lovable relationship between this unexpected duo is a model friendship.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stinky...Rated E for everyone!, March 26, 2009
By
This review is from: Stinky (Toon) (Hardcover)
This is a great book for all boys who love to read, who don't really love to read, or who are reluctant to read! My 5th grader, who falls into the latter category, picked this up to read and fell in love with Stinky. Buy this book if your reluctant reader loved "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" series. It definitely appeals to that age group!

5.0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Kids @ Teens Read Too, January 22, 2009
This review is from: Stinky (Toon) (Hardcover)
Stinky Seymour is a monster who lives in the swamp. The dirty, mucky, smelly, gooey swamp. He lives with his pet toad, Wartbelly, and really loves his pickled onions.

What he doesn't love is the town on the other side of the swamp, because towns have - kids! Kids like to eat apples (yuck!) and take baths (double yuck!), and they don't like his dirty, mucky, smelly, gooey swamp.

And that's just the way Stinky likes it.

But then Nick, a new kid from the town, builds a tree house in Stinky's swamp. Stinky is not about to let this go on, so he hatches a plan that will get the kid out of his swamp.

What follows is a fun adventure where Stinky and Nick both learn a thing or two - Stinky about the type of kids who love swamps, and toads, and ghosts, and Nick about making new friends.

The Raw Junior books are a wonderful introduction to graphic novels for kids, and STINKY is a great addition to the line. The full-color illustrations fit perfectly with the story, and the text is simple enough for younger readers to read on their own or with a parent. A really fun book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stinky...anything but!, November 24, 2008
This review is from: Stinky (Toon) (Hardcover)
Stinky is a swamp dwelling monster who learns he may have more in common with the new kid than he'd like to believe. Both Stinky and Nick, the new kid, learn to appreciate each others' differences and realize that once you get to know someone, they aren't all that scary. Beautifully illustrated, this clever story finds new friends in the most unlikely of places.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful option for young readers, July 28, 2008
This review is from: Stinky (Toon) (Hardcover)
In an era full of visual distractions, "Stinky" shines as a positive example of new media -- a combination of graphic and literal learning that plays into the ways modern kids think. With stunning graphics and a captivatingly sweet story, Davis' "Stinky" is a pleasure to read, and moreover, a pleasurable way to learn HOW to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars kids love it, June 16, 2011
This review is from: Stinky (Toon) (Hardcover)
This book is very, very funny, with a nice message about the opportunity for friendship. A swamp creature panics when a little kid builds a treehouse in his swamp. Stinky tries to drive the boy away (he's clean! he eats sweet things like apples!), but fails. What will he do next?

This format is engaging for reluctant readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great transition to chapter books, August 6, 2010
This review is from: Stinky (Toon) (Paperback)
For my seven-year-old daughter, this is a funny, charming book that is perfect for bedtime reading alone. The excitement pulls her into the next chapter. The chapters aren't too long for a new reader, and the pictures assist with the story. She loves it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for kids and adult comic book aficionados alike, September 14, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Stinky (Toon) (Hardcover)
First of all, it's a great kids' book, with 40 colorful and imaginative pages.

It's also a joy for those who, like me, have been watching the nascent career of comic book newcomer Eleanor Davis with admiration. Davis, who's only 25, got her start a few years ago in minicomics and quickly became the best contributor to Fantagraphics' anthology, Mome. Davis is interesting to watch because she demonstrates such a strong command of the comics medium and keeps constantly changing her artistic and storytelling approaches. She's experimenting, trying new things out, and it's interesting to see her nail the landing, so to speak, on Stinky, a professional, polished and completely straightforward children's story. Can't wait to see what she does next...!
