In my opinion, there has never been a greater comedy duo than Richard Pryor/Gene Wilder. They are two comic geniuses who mesh perfectly when they come together.
In STIR CRAZY, their best film in my opinion, the two play an actor and a playwright from New York who decide to head out west to look for work. However, along the way, their plans are put on hold as they get framed for bank robbery and find themselves in a Texas penitentiary. They then go through a series of adventures attempting to prove their innocence, escape from prison, and stay alive.
The movie does not contain a very original plot, but the viewer can expect many laughs watching two of the greatest comedians of all time at their best!

"Stir Crazy" is Gene Wilder's and Richard Pryor's second film in which they starred together. Although this film contains many very funny scenes, the chemistry that Wilder and Pryor display here isn't as strong and cohesive as in their first film "Silver Streak", but is do-able. The scenes which slow this picture down are the rodeo-escape scenes toward the end of the film, and display very little life and are somewhat boring. The plot of "Stir Crazy", though, where Wilder and Pryor are framed for armed robbery and sent to prison, is quite amusing and hilarious, with the right amount of flavor and texture to grab my attention! The fact is, any movie starring Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor, with the exception of "Another You", will command at least a four-star rating. Any die-hard fan(s) of these fine actors/performers will want to add "Stir Crazy" to their must-have collection(s).

This movie is a true classic, Pryor and Wilder at their best. In my opinion, you can't go wrong with this one in your collection. Also, we will miss you Richard...my condolences to his family. Rest in Peace.

Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor was a good comedy team of the 1970s, making several hit movies together, this being one of the more memorable.

Viewing this movie recently after a 25-year absence, it was a shock to me to hear the language. I had remembered this strictly as a light-hearted comedy but I can see why it's rated "R." That is solely for the language, especially by Pryor, but he was known for his profane humor.

If you can put up with that, the film is downright funny, even today. I found myself laughing out loud at a few scenes, all of which I remembered vividly from several viewings in the '70s. They are still just as funny today.

Who could forget that mammoth criminal with the long, long name - Erland van Lidth de Jeude? He was the guy that scared the heck out of everyone, just by his physical presence. In real life, that man was the opposite of his projected image on screen. He was a graduate of MIT, an accomplished opera singer, an Olympic wrestler, devoted husband and father, writer, etc. The poor man died at the age of 34.

It also was interesting to see such a young looking Craig T Nelson and JoBeth Williams.

Stir Crazy is about as funny a movie as was ever made. There are TOO many classic, original scenes to count. EVERY scene at the prison is a riot; the movie's opening scenes are incredibly original and funny as well (Harry's marijuana sprinkled into the dinner party salad, etc.). The "We bad" scene at the jail (their first stop in the criminal justice system) was totally original, was ad-libbed, and is priceless. Their time in court, though brief (which alone makes it funny as well), was hilarious. The closing theme song (sung by Kiki Dee), heck, is terrific, too.

Poitier, the legend, as director, and actors Wilder and Pryor, scored one of the hilarious comedies for the ages with this one. Scene after scene was original and gut-busting. It was totally fresh then, and was also very "cool" comedy for the time, and it holds up not just "remarkably well," but FAR better than ANY comedy of the last 20 years. Easily.

I don't understand these reviewers who say this is "very funny but not as funny as Silver Streak." SS is nearly lame in comparison; Stir Crazy is MUCH funnier. MANY scenes from Stir Crazy will stay with you forever, word for word. Enjoy Stir Crazy another time! Along with Animal House and the original (1968) The Producers, they are the three funniest movies of the past 45 years.

Even supporting actors Craig T. Nelson and Barry Corbin have memorable lines, as does the guy playing Blade, who teaches Pryor how to deal with a bull as a rodeo clown-- HILARIOUS! (while teaching Pryor the meaning of the rodeo term "freight train"): "... A bull is WORSE than a freight train. Because a freight train don't back up to finish the job!"

Also, the DVD picture and sound quality are perfect; same for the blu-ray version--even better!

"I'll put Jack Graham on Donahue, warden."/Craig T. Nelson, as head prison guard; Response: "Put Blade on Graham"/Barry Corbin, as the prison warden

This is one of the best movies i have ever seen it s so interesting how they find out who the real theifs are. I only discovered Richard Pryor a couple of years ago. I first stated watching him in stand up and now he is my favorite. Any way go and rent or buy this DVD.
