Book Description

May 1, 2001
Stirring the Waters is a beautifully written guide for learning how to live a creative life without foregoing life's necessities; how to strike a balance between feeding your spirit and paying your bills. Just as Julia Cameron helped readers explore their inner-selves in The Artist's Way, author Janell Moon invites readers, through daily writing practice, to delve into the self to affirm where one has been and how it affects the choices made and the roads taken.

Stirring the Waters is both spiritual and practical, offering case studies of other seekers who have successfully written their way back to their true selves. Whether you call it a search for your muse, or your goddess, or your spirit, Moon will help you to use writing to develop your spiritual practice; to access that sense that you are connected to something greater than just your self.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Favorite at Zen Center Library, May 14, 2001
By
Celeste West (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Stirring the Waters: Writing to Find Your Spirit (Paperback)
As a writer and as the librarian of the Zen Center Library in San Francisco, I am always on the lookout for writers skilled at guiding a seeker along the path by the use of writing as a special tool to manifest a powerful, vigorous spiritual practice. (Ah, flailing in the spiritual deeps, I'd best define my terms. For me, an authentic spiritual practice is formed in the ever moving energies of clarity, kindness and joy, all wrapped in awesome Mystery.)

In "Stirring of the Waters," vivid poet Janell Moon inspires my commitment and courage to wake up by PLAYING with words, bringing them forth on paper with gentleness, yet great commitment--even as distraction and self-doubt loom, the damn "d"s which seem to assail every authentic spiritual seeker. Gratefully, in "Stirring's" nine-week program, I am given Janell Moon to accompany me on a regular, daily quest for meaning, a boon companion with a wise smile to share the spirit's wounds and to inspire its ever creative renewal. As I continue to try to understand who in the world I am and how in the world I shall live, I am now transforming my own daily practice, sensing new ways to alchemize the fluid in my pens and the stored sunshine in my paper into a flowing chi of powers. I plan to continue each morning to hone my life in "Stirring's" inspiring practices of focus, letting go, and connection.

I especially enjoy the sweet paradox that by more consciously stirring the waters, I am learning how to explore their calming depths as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars stirring the waters:Writing to Find your Spirit., May 20, 2001

This review is from: Stirring the Waters: Writing to Find Your Spirit (Paperback)
Nathanial Hawthorne would never have been frustrated when writing Moses, had he been privey to Janell Moons' Book. She certainly brings different tools that I had not found in Julia Camerons book. Simply put, she was challenging my natural emotions, perpetuating a vein for which I could creatively begin to write. I will definitely inform the writing group that I meet with and notify the professors. I also just purchased the Poetry book Mouth of Home and have been savoring each poem. Each piece is an experience. My senses feel heightened and aroused.
