5.0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book! February 5, 2009
By Inky
I am so happy I ordered this book and that a republication was done of the original. What I really love is how they've included the original black and white vintage pattern instructions, along with modern instructions with modern yarns and, best of all, modern sizing! The photography is lovely and I know there are at least a dozen projects I plan to make from this one book! Well done!

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful resource and reading July 2, 2010
This book is a re-compilation of the author's original 1970's version. According to notes in the book itself, this current version was recreated from extant copies of the 70's book, the original notes/plates having been destroyed in a fire.

This, I'm sure, was a huge undertaking, and great care has been lavished on the layout and printing. It's a lovingly set and printed book, and very pleasing to the eye.

The patterns are an interesting step thru time. There's a historical overview of each decade's styling and construction, which are just plain interesting to read. Little notations and comments are sprinkled throughout, and these are just wonderful -- hints, tips and tricks from the era; several of which I intend to use!

The patterns themselves are presented in original format, and new modern format (with new terminology, techniques and yarns. I very much appreciate this, as most similar "updated from the original" conversions use much larger yarns and lose much of the character and styling which makes the garment.

I would definitely recommend this book. It's well worth the price. I'm very much looking forward to the next volume.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Resource April 28, 2010
By T. Cain
I was fortunate enough to recently be able to purchase this book in my local yarn store, who ordered it from the UK. It is just stunning. Page after page of vintage glamour is enhanced by sharp photography. The original patterns are included along with the updates. There are approximately 60 patterns, including a few crochet patterns. The layout is informative and appealing, with sections divided by "era", which may comprise a few years or more than a decade. At the beginning of each section is a comprehensive introduction to the fashion and beauty standards of that era and their socioeconomic bases. I love the modern colors and sizing, and although I haven't made anything from the book yet, I cannot wait! A lovely gift for any knitter, new or experienced.
