Book Description

February 18, 2009
In an eerie attic filled with living toys and dolls, one rag doll named Stitch begins to awaken from his cotton-filled amnesia. Why does Granny Pairley keep Stitch and his rag doll cousins captive in the playroom? Did they once have lives outside the attic walls? Taunted by a pair of nasty fairies called the Benders, and menaced by the very stinky Yum-Tum Bear, Stitch finds comfort with Simon, the handsomest of the rag doll boys. Along come the ghastly puppets Voodoo Dolly and Tinybones, leading Stitch through hidden passageways to a dreadful secret room. This digest-size re-issue of Stitch collects the entire story, plus all-new extras exclusive to this edition.

Review

Bold and original, with a tone that shifts from horrific to humorous. Stitch alternates between being cute and creepy and manages to straddle that line between dear and dark. --Greg McElhatton - icomics.com

More About the Author

Tommy Kovac has been writing and illustrating comics and other works since 1999. He wrote & illustrated the original comic book series "Stitch," "Skelebunnies," and "Autumn," through SLG Publishing.
Kovac then wrote "Wonderland" for SLG/Disney, a new look at Lewis Carroll's classic Alice stories, illustrated by Sonny Liew. It was selected for the American Library Association's "Great Graphic Novels For Teens" list for 2010.
Kovac's latest writing project is, "The Royal Historian of Oz." This graphic novel takes a unique look at L. Frank Baum's Oz through the eyes of a failed writer named Jasper Fizzle, and his teenage son, Frank. "Royal Historian" is illustrated by Andy Hirsch, and published by SLG.
Kovac's storytelling ranges from naughty, to tragic, to fantastical, depending on the project. He has no formal training in art or writing, but reads all the time, and belongs to the Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators, as well as a writer's critique group. Sometimes he also creates zines ("Library Bonnet," and "Disenchanted Moue") filled with thoughtful essays, dirty drawings, spontaneous cartoons, and weird activity pages. He's even done some very recent dabbling in eBook publication.
Kovac currently works full-time as a library technician for a 7th-12th grade college prep academy, and resides in Orange County, California, with his handsome husband, Anthony. They've been together since 1990.

This review is from: Stitch (Paperback)
This is a really differnt story. A fairy tale with grim undertones and all the wonder of childhood. The art perfectly captures that schizophrenic mood of joy and dread that the story calls for. The art is so detailed I could look at it for hours, discovering new things there. The story is mysterious and touching.
