Product Description

The Stock Market Philosopher: Insights of a Soviet-Born, New York-Bred Hedge Fund Trader is an entertaining examination of a successful Wall Street trader s thoughts on the stock market, starting with his early attraction to risk-taking endeavors. It's a thoughtful book on trading strategy masquerading as a memoir. Favel draws the reader in with tales of his early years in Soviet Ukraine, followed by his high school and college years in New York. Favel s interest in market strategy was piqued as a youth playing fantiki, a Russian children s game involving Bazooka Joe gum wrappers. His family immigrated to the United States while he was still in grade school and he continued his quest for quick riches through his college career. Favel s youthful exploits eventually paid off, as he began his Wall Street career and began mastering the art of trading. Explore the author s evolving out-of-the-box trading philosophy and strategies, including his thoughts on fundamental vs. technical analysis, modern portfolio theory and the random walk school of analysis.

About the Author

Gennady Favel emigrated from the Soviet Union with his family when he was 8 years old. He went to school in Brooklyn and finished Baruch College with a degree in investment management. After working for several Wall Street firms, Favel joined a growing quantitative hedge fund as a black box trader, where he is now head of equity trading. In the past few years he has helped create several high frequency trading strategies that generate returns multiple times greater than any market index. His experience at the company has given him unique insight and knowledge about the inner workings of stock markets and trading processes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, November 17, 2008
By RedDuke (Brooklyn, NY) - See all my reviews
Interesting book to read. Being from former soviet union myself, I read fantiki part with some nostalgic memories. There is nothing original about what Gennady wrote - all is on the net, what is interesting is that he combined some of the major financials cliche in one book, which is not big, and dispelled them very cleverly. The book was fun to read, and thanks to NYC Subway delays :), I read it in few trips.

I day trade futures, and lost all financial naivete a long time ago, but majority still holds it. The current financial crisis might (just might not will) change things around. Books like this one need to be promoted because an average person can read it, enjoy it and what is most important understand its concepts, and as a result make better financial decisions. The publisher and author should do a better job in promoting it. I accidentally saw the preview in Futures magazine and thus bought it.

The only thing I wish Gennady went into is his experience in algo trading, but that would make the book very interesting for someone like me, and boring for many others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Insightful, October 14, 2008
I blew through this book in one day. It is witty, smart and manages to keep you completely engaged, unable to put it down for a second. A refreshing view on finance and investment philosophy, coupled with his sometimes humorous writing style Favel is able to dissect somewhat complicated matters and reach insiders of the industry as well as novices.

I found this book to be original as well as entertaining. I think that readers will find this book to have a lot of truths about the market especially in the current market environment.
