5.0 out of 5 stars A must for stock scenery construction
I attended a scene-building workshop with Mr. Raoul in 1980. I learned techniques that I use to this very day. A few short years later I purchased this book. I used it to death. 3.0 out of 5 stars Not really for High Schoolers
I'm President of a High School Theater Boosters organization in MclEAN va and in charge of set construction. I bought the book so that the techie crew of kids could read it and understand what we were doing. Not a great response, they found it too technical and very wordy. I found it thorough and very dryly written

I attended a scene-building workshop with Mr. Raoul in 1980. I learned techniques that I use to this very day. A few short years later I purchased this book. I used it to death. (A book can only take so much sawdust and glue!) I bought a second copy which I subsequently gave to an up-and-coming technical director and then purchased my third copy. I seldom have to consult it anymore, as I have learned most of it by heart, but occasionally I will refer to it for an "odd" problem, and it is an excellent teaching resource. The illustrations perfectly illustrate the concepts being taught. The text is humorous but not at the expense of being informative. The section on "shop math" alone is worth the purchase price!

This book will not teach you how to design a set, but it will most definitely teach you how to build the pieces that make up most common stage scenery. Not only that, but you will be able to reuse most, if not all, of the pieces time and time again, which is a God-send for any theater on a budget! (And what theater isn't?!)

This was the best book that we ordered! Although it is very much like a text book, this was exactly what we needed as a reference for building sets. It arrived in a timely fashion and the book was in excellent shape.

NOT a guide to building. It's a textbook teaching basics of materials, safety, and history - not a guidebook to building, painting, or designing. I'm sure I will find a use for it, but it's not helping me in the way I wanted it to when I bought it.

Wow - this is one incredible book on scenery construction. Whether you are an amateur doing your first production or a seasoned professional, you need this book in your library. If you are the producer, director, technical coordinator, or totally responsible for the entire scenery, this book is a must have. I have written, produced, directed, acted in and built stage sets for numerous stage productions. Currently working on a movie and I wanted to create more detailed settings than what you use in stage plays. This book was recommended in another book I was studying on filmmaking so I took a gamble and ordered it. I wish I had this book in the 1960s when I started building stage sets for a magic show and for every production I have done since then. What this book doesn't cover, you don't need. Even if you're not into reading, just the illustrations alone are worth 50x the small cost of this book. My recommendation is simple - get it now before your next production!
