Editorial Reviews

The four works on this disc come from the first nine years of a compositional career that would span almost another half century. Yet today, one scarely hears them as 'early Stockhausen,' but rather as a series of essential cornerstones of the emerging post-war European avant-garde on which Stockhausen, as the youngest composer involved, exercised a crucial influence. What should strike one is not what these pieces have in common, but how different they are from one another. Each exemplifies a phase of Stockhausen's early development. The Ensemble Recherche is one of the most distinguished ensembles for new music. With more than 450 premieres to its credit since it was founded in 1985, the ensemble has made a substantial contribution to the development of contemporary chamber and ensemble music.

I have only heard one other recording of Kontra-Punkte, on an RCA LP from decades ago. Hard to believe how much more fluent and even lilting this performance sounds; this music is no longer a struggle for today's players, who bring to it the singing qualities it should always have had. The same holds true for the other pieces, with the exception of Zeitmasze; whether by conscious choice or luck of the draw, it seems much stiffer and angular than the other works, reminding me more of certain Xenakis pieces (such as Xas) than Stockhausen. Unexpected in a piece where aleatoric qualities determine much. Nevertheless, fine performances, and a very good place to jump into the Stockhausenian ocean.

I only have about 8 or 9 Stockhausen cds and this is my favorite so far. Beingn a fan of 20th century music and busy, hard-score music (Varese, Bartok, Stravinsky, Ligetti,Zappa, Boulez, Webern, Schoenberg, etc.etc.) this feels right at home with me. It is 4 pieces of orchestral scores, very well thought out and very well executed.
I-N_C_R_E_D_I_B_L-E Music and highly recommended to fans of the composers mentioned. Excellent intro if you are curious about this very talked about and original composer.

This superb recording of seminal chamber works by Stockhausen is a perfect example of what was missing when I first sought out his music ten years ago. The ensemble recherche is a leading neuemusik ensemble, and they perform these 1950s serialist works with great style. The recordings, from August 2008 and January 2009, were co-produced by Wergo and the WDR (West Deutschen Rundfunk Koln -- West German Radio), and they sound cool, bright, and splendid.

Kontra-Punkte fur zehn instrumente (1952-3 -- 11'51)
The ten instruments of the ensemble form five high-low pairs: flute & bassoon, clarinet & bass clarinet, trumpet & trombone, piano & harp, and violin & cello. The piece begins with all ten, but they gradually drop out, leaving the piano at the end with a demanding solo. Very cool and sleek, it brings to mind 1950s sonic scientists with horn-rimmed glasses and white lab coats, performing an experiment.

Refrain fur Klavier, Celesta und Schlagzeug (1959 -- 11'52)
This piece from several years later for piano, vibraphone (doubling glockenspiel), and celesta, also includes other pitched and unpitched auxiliary percussion instruments, and quite strikingly, phonetically defined but unpitched vocal sounds. The basic structure is a sequence of chords of up to six notes, "whose duration is determined physically by how long it takes them to 'decay' -- to die away, which already gives music a kind of meditative quality" (from Richard Toop's informative liner notes). What really gives "Refrain" a zany quality is the vocals. This evokes, for me, another 1950s archetype, beatniks with berets, perhaps having listened to the Modern Jazz Quartet with Milt Jackson on vibes, and trying for that sort of hipster cool but without the swing.

I was among the unfortunate to purchase the 3LP boxed set of Momente in the '70s. It enjoyed airtime, only late at night... as house-clearing music! Few could resist the urge to go home. Discernible composition rules over 'artistic' abandon and random noise. This explains why the pieces on this album have become classics, while others have become 'interesting' relics. The Deutsche Grammophon London Sinfonietta LP with Kontra-Punkte and Zeitmasze was exceptional, which is why I bought this album. These early Stockhausen works are strongly serial, with hints back to Webern. Refrain would be better without the yells that foreshadow Stockhausen's aforementioned excesses. Schlagtrio is a hitherto unknown gem that makes the exorbitant cost of this rather short album worthwhile. Couldn't they have included Kreuzspiel?
