Right up there with "Kind of Blue", February 18, 2000
This review is from: In Stockholm 1960 Complete (Audio CD)
This is Miles and two of his Quintets at their very best. The music that the bands play here is amazing. Coltrane and Stitt have very unique styles and thus add their own effects to the music. Coltrane plays fairly normally on the traditional songs, but on the modal tunes such as "So What" his playing borders on the free form that he would soon be getting into. However, he is only heard on the first seven tracks (the fourth of which is an interview with him), and Stitt certainly holds his own. In contrast to Coltrane's pseudo-avant-garde playing, Stitt plays very lyrically, weaving through excellent bop-style solos throughout the album. Miles's playing is beautiful as well, from his muted ballad tone on Green Dolphin Street to his hard swinging on Walkin'. Together, these 4 CDs contain over four hours of some of the best jazz on the market. I highly reccommend that you get these; if you like Miles's music then you won't be disappointed.

I rank this up there with Kind of Blue., February 1, 2000

This set of CD's, although quite expensive, is well worth the price. The music that the band plays here is amazing. Coltrane plays excellently on these CDs, although his soloing on some of the modal pieces like So What borders on free form. Although Coltrane is only heard on the first seven tracks (the fourth of which is an interview with him), Sonny Stitt certainly holds his own with Miles and the dynamic rhythm section of Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb. In contrast to Coltrane's pseudo-free-form playing, Stitt plays very lyrically, weaving through excellent bop-style solos throughout the album. Miles's playing is quite nice as well, from his muted ballad tone on Green Dolphin Street to his hard swinging on Walkin'. He uses the upper register much more frequently on these sets than on many others, but in contrast to those, he consistently manages to keep from missing pitches. These 4 CDs together hold over four hours of jazz. If you have enough money to buy this set, I would highly recommend that you do; if you like Miles's music then you won't be disappointed.

Excellent album, April 3, 2000
This review is from: In Stockholm 1960 Complete (Audio CD)
This is one of my all-time favorite albums. The playing here is unmatched on almost any other album that I've ever heard. Miles's quiet, introverted playing is complemented by Coltrane's loud, fast scalar lines. Bass players will probably like this album quite a bit too, as Paul Chambers solos on many of the tracks. I strongly recommend this album to all jazz fans.
