Cons: **Shoulder Straps - NOT adjustable, very stiff, and narrow in size S/M (This was the deal-breaker for me.

I've been very pleased with this new jacket. It stays in place due to the very grippy neoprene inside, but doesn't bind up or feel as though it's not moving with my torso. You can hardly feel it when it's on. I bought the accessory throw bag (which fits nicely into the huge front pocket), and tow rope. I wish the clip-in for the biner on the tow rope was on the right side but oh well.

All in all a bomber jacket...love the look and I think it's going to last a long time.

Got this to replace my old, well loved, Stohlquist. This thing is by far the best Rescue vest that you could possibly get your hands on. So plush, padded....plus it has a beverage holder pouch on the front, what more could you ask for? Plenty of spine protection in the back, comfy, great location for clips, knife, etc. Don't hesitate, if you do any sort of guiding, creek boating, or just want to be extremely comfy in your life vest, get this one.

While i did not get to try this PFD while paddling, i do think it would be an excellent PFD if it fit. I love the way it looks and the construction and materials feel solid. The PFD hugged my torso nicely when i tightened the straps down, but there is only one problem. The Shoulder straps are not adjustable, and therefore, cause the vest to awkwardly sit very high on my chest. The straps themselves are also narrow and dig in to my neck causing chafing. I'm a pretty average 5'11" guy, for reference. The fact that your torso has to be a certain length for this to fit is ridiculous. If you are considering buying this, make sure you try it on first, because it's only going to fit if your of a certain size.

The title says it all. This is the best life jaccket I have ever used kayaking. It is very sturdy, and is more adjustable than anything I have seen before. I think it's worth the money.

This PFD is plenty roomy and allows for very good freedom of movement. The side entry is much easier than the slip on style of the Astral Greenjacket. The shoulder straps have nice padding for portages, when compared to the Kokotat Ronin Pro, which has irritating buckles on the strap that dig into your shoulder. Those were the only three I looked at when buying a rescue PFD, but this one so far doesn't have anything irritating about it which makes it the winner. I only used the quick release once to try it out and it seemed to work fine.

I just finished a two week Rescue Vest Test-a-Thon, and I put some notes together to try and help others with making a similar decision. As I state below, I have not paddled ANY of these vests. These are my thoughts after extensive research, repeatedly trying them on/wearing them around the house, and looking them over like the gear-junkie that I am.

Long story short, I was sold on the Descent, but it didn't work out. I'm now 99% sold on the Maximus Prime. I was really surprised how well it fit after thinking it looked a bit bulky, and the construction is rock solid. I did not get to try out the Ronin Pro, but did try the Greenjacket and Zen. If you want/like to get into the weeds (details!), then continue reading for a more extensive description and a Pro/Con list for all four vests.

(Side Note: I wish Amazon allowed linking of files so I could just upload a pdf rather than do a large copy/paste)

    Rescue PFD Reviews

What is the "best" Rescue PFD? I don't think there is really an answer to that. I decided at the end of this season that I wanted to upgrade to a rescue vest from my Astral Norge, so I started doing my research. I thought I figured it all out by way of extensive online reading. I had concluded that the Descent was the vest for me. In fact, I almost bought a used one without ever trying one on. I'm really glad I didn't because it turns out that vest/the sizing they offer doesn't work for me. So in the end it's all about proper fit, and to know what fits you best, you really need to try them on. It should also be noted that I have not paddled with a single one of these vests, so take these comments for whatever you think they're worth.

This is a fabulous small craft PFD! It is secure, the fit conforms to my body, it has a convenient pocket with a loops to connect the lanyard for whistle, knife, and chapstick!
