Another cut and paste scam. Don't waste your money. And don't believe these "rave reviews" that any self-interested person can come on here and write. If you have read any of the major stoics -- Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus, Seneca -- then you hardly need this "book" which essentially just tells you to read them again, without offering any additional insights. Seddon says he is a professor of philosophy at Warnborough College Ireland. If you do a little research, it is easy to find that Warnborough College Ireland is a fly-by-night organization that has been besieged by various lawsuits from governments, universities, and individuals for fraudulently pretending to be a fully accredited, degree granting institution. Take my advice, ALWAYS do a little research before you spend your hard earned money -- especially on this website.

[...]
Warnborough College Ireland courses are not recognised by Ireland's Department of Education, the Higher Education and Training Awards Council (HETAC) or the National Qualifications Authority of Ireland (NQAI). In February 2008, Sean O'Foghlu, chief executive of NQAI told the Irish Independent that because Warnborough College is not a recognised higher education institution or awarding body the qualifications are "effectively worthless".

If you want a real study in stoicism, then I would suggest:
-- The Enchiridion by Epictetus
-- Discourses of Epictetus by Epictetus
-- Seneca: Letters from a Stoic by Seneca
-- Meditations by Marcus Aurelius

But a good general survey, and great guide to "applied stoicism" would be:
-- A Guide to the Good Life: The Ancient Art of Stoic Joy by William Irvine

This book is an expansion of an online course that the author used to teach. I had already read the course papers but decided to purchase this book for the added material. It was worth the money. No other work I have read has helped me to understand Stoicism as much as this book. I recommend it.

Stoic Serenity is a practical guide to Stoicism as a way of life. The author, Keith Seddon, describes himself as a freelance academic and author. It is actually based on a correspondence course, first published in 2000, by an organisation called The Stoic Foundation. The course focuses mainly on the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius and the Letters of Seneca, probably the two most relevant sources for novice students of Stoicism. These are "set texts", which the reader should also have access to, in order to follow the coursework in Stoic Serenity. Each chapter concludes with some written exercises and at the back of the book examples of answers provided by previous students are given along with tutor feedback.

I thought this was a good introduction to the challenge of applying Stoicism in the modern world, in one's daily life. It's probably going to be more accessible than most other books on Stoicism and provides clearly-described advice and exercises that anyone should be able to engage with. The whole point of Stoicism is that we should apply it in our own lives and this course gives the reader a good framework for beginning to do that. It's also written in a style that encourages critical thinking and self-reflection, rather than merely teaching the theory and practice of Stoicism didactically. This book doesn't engage with the comparison between Stoicism and the techniques of modern psychotherapy, which may reveal a wider repertoire of Stoic "exercises", but it does a good job of helping the student to learn the core principles of Stoicism as a way of life and, as such, it would probably be the best thing for many newcomers to the subject to read first.

Seddon quite rightly observes that for Stoics, "Our responsibility is primarily to ourselves...

Yes, this is a textbook of sorts. In fact this is how Stoic Serenity started: as loose-leaf papers handed out to interested college students. There are journal entries that is asked of you to complete. This are other readings required.

This is all because this book isn't meant to learn about Stoicism. It's about learning to live it.

If you're looking to just learn about Stoicism, this book isn't for you.
