4.0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST FROM ASYLUM
DRACULA'S CURSE

I love low budget movies and seem to have a soft spot for a little company called "The Asylum". Don't know why don't I continue to buy their films even though lately most have been, not so good. But when this one first came out I had high hopes since I am a huge vampire fan. Luckily for me this is indeed one of their better ones, at least on...

1.0 out of 5 stars Run, don't walk!
This gives new meaning to the term "horror film". This movie was so horrible that I actually threw it right in the trash. I've never even thought of doing that before. I would have felt terrible if someone else had wasted money on it buying it from me. Bad acting, bad script, bad story, bad effects. Not even any nearly naked vampire girls. No good side at all. This movie goes in the garage sale pile. The movie was the second worse movie that I have ever seen. The package looked great, but the movie was just plain terrible.

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring, August 18, 2008

This was a total disappointment. Acting is really bad and laughable because of it. These people do not act and look ridiculous when they talk, move or a simple thing like standing still looks awful on screen aaagggh. I hated it even though I tried hard to like it, since the visual effects are more or less acceptable and that's about it. Avoid this movie like a plague it is bad and boring too much talking and no action, horror, passion, blood, nothing!!! Or at least nothing that can be believed.

DRACULA'S CURSE

I love low budget movies and seem to have a soft spot for a little company called "The Asylum". Don't know why don't I continue to buy their films even though lately most have been, not so good. But when this one first came out I had high hopes since I am a huge vampire fan. Luckily for me this is indeed one of their better ones, at least on some things. I viewed this recently and then again with the commentary and had a great time doing so. The thing about the Asylum is that they get a bad rep for doing the mockbusters, but they do original work as well. Some films they do are good others not so much but I have a good time with em.

A group of vampire hunters are killing the creatures off one group at a time and seem to be doing a good job at it. They are doing so well in fact that the vampires call for a meeting with this group of skilled assassins. It seems they want to renew an old treaty that Dracula once struck with Van Hellsing and all humans. As time went by and Dracula vanished the treaty fell apart but now they want to put it back on here in present day. The leader of the humans thinks this is the best move for both sides and agrees to the terms. Needless to say his team does not agree but they follow suit. But there is a new group of vampires in town lead by a vicious female vampire who starts taking out both sides. So now human and vampire must come together to stop her and her girls.

Writer/director Leigh Scott I think did a great job on an obviously very low budget, the story in particular. The storyline for this film is extremely entertaining and meshes different vampire myths together with ease. I like the way that all the different kinds of vampires from different myths and stories and films were all together in this. I also liked the way it was explained in how and why they are like that. Add in that for the most part the creature effects are on point and you have a really fun flick. Sure some things need work obviously but on the budget I am sure they did the best they could.

The ending as well is very interesting in this film and kinda took me by surprise but it made perfect sense if you were paying attention the whole time. The characters are many and can be a problem at times but for the most part the characters are interesting [even when the actors are not]. From sexy vampires to the classic Nosferatu to the monster looking ones all are here, very nice blend of them all and in a mafia style to like the "Underworld" films. The acting at times though is kinda weak and the dialogue could be better but over all a good time on the coach. The commentary is good with cast and crew alike talking about the film, and some behind the scenes and blooper reels are included.

This was a good release from the Asylum and when compared to other films released by this company this is with out a doubt one of the best.

This movie has some very bad acting and the makeup effects have a do it yourself look. The plot is fair and is saved from a complete loss by Jeff Denton (Rafe) and Rhett Giles (Van Helsing).

I wasn't expecting much out of this low budget vampire flick, but half way through I forgot that I wasn't watching a big studio movie. Cool characters that were well acted, fight scenes where you can actually see what is happening, and great looking monster effects combine to make a film definitely worth watching. This movie has more plot and character development than the last ten Hollywood blockbusters I've seen combined. Definitely worth a look.

5.0 out of 5 stars Satisfying, Layered Movie, August 12, 2011
By
This review is from: Bram Stoker's Dracula's Curse (DVD)
"Bram Stoker's Dracula's Curse" movie is much better than most Asylum movies. It is a great movie in its own right.

* Characters: The movie has two strong males and a host of supporting characters, but they remain mostly distinct. The villains also have their own individual identities. A wide variety of protagonists and vampires are shown in the movie.

* Plot/Storyline: Similar to the characters, the plotlines in "Dracula's Curse" are also different and distinct. One major plotline for the movie as a whole, and minor plotlines for most of the characters. The movie is composed of several chapters; this mimics the feel of a book and keeps the movie coherent.

* Ending: The ending has twists, and the last few minutes of the movie can be read in a number of ways.

* The Good: Lots of action, believable acting. Some special features include deleted scenes and movie commentary.

* The Bad: Some of the vampire fangs impede the speech of the actors; no post-production to fix this? The movie is visually dark; a little light would have added some contrast.

Overall, this movie is fun to watch. Five stars.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good story, but everything else unimaginably bad., January 29, 2011
Have you ever read a book where the story was interesting, but the book itself was so badly written it was all but unreadable? If you have then I really do not need to say more about this movie to you other than, it is like that. Dracula's Curse is about a group of vampire hunters who form a pact with the vampires, the bloodsuckers will stop feeding on humans, and the hunters will stop killing them, unfortunately after the pact have kept everyone safe for five years a powerful female vampire, Elizabeth Bathorley, breaks the pact and starts a war. The plot is full of politics between the hunters and the vampires, love affairs and complications and I sat the whole movie thinking that this could have been quite good, if only the filmmakers had done a better job at well, everything else.

The costumes and visual effects of this movie is terrible, I get that this is low budget, but do not those who made this movie understand that if you do not have the cash to do it properly do not try flashy creature effects, it is far more effective just to have a actor dressed normally, perhaps with some contact lenses to give him strange eyes than to try something fancy and fail miserably, and what are up with the costumes, it looks like the director raided the cheap Halloween outfit section at the local supermarket. How is the viewer supposed to take the movie seriously when one of the characters go around in a devil costume, complete with red face paint and horns which looks no better than what anyone might do for a Halloween party? Seriously what where they thinking?

This whole movie is just a train wreck, you see the mikes hanging in the roof, the actors sound like they are reading the lines right off the script and there is no feeling behind it, and I can understand them for the dialog is often just plain stupid. Now I love bad B horror movies, however the problem with this movie is that it takes itself way, way to seriously, it is like the director sat nodding and thought to himself that he was making a great movie, when in reality there is nothing likable in this film except for the plot.

I should give this movie 0 stars, but because I am a sucker for story I will give it 2, not because there is much redeeming traits about this film, but because of what it could have been if it had just been made better.

3.0 out of 5 stars a very suprising thriller, July 12, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
While the title will make anyone squirm because on how it sounds trust me it really is not that bad, however it could have been better. The idea of a truce between vampires and hunters is interesting but the real deal is the villainess who does not care about the deal breaks everything. So I am sorry to say it was good effort, but please check it out.
