5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
I had a feeder with four socks that attracted vast flocks of finches, right outside my window, and I loved it. What I didn't love was the huge piles of seed that spilled out every day. Far more seed was wasted than eaten.

This feeder can't hold as many finches as four long socks, obviously, but I've counted 8 or 9 at a time clustered around it. And spillage...

This was my upgrade from a finch sock, or so I thought. The birds flocked to it at first, but then they would only visit, look at it, MAYBE take a seed or two then leave. The problems?

The first problem I noticed was the small tray at the bottom of the feeder. It fills with dislodged seeds and shells that rot and mildew quickly. This then spreads and begins...

This feeder can't hold as many finches as four long socks, obviously, but I've counted 8 or 9 at a time clustered around it. And spillage can't be more than about one twentieth of the old feeder. This thing is sturdy, and the lid comes off easily for refilling.

Highly recommended.

1.0 out of 5 stars High Hopes but Dismal Reality, November 8, 2009

This was my upgrade from a finch sock, or so I thought. The birds flocked to it at first, but then they would only visit, look at it, MAYBE take a seed or two then leave. The problems?

The first problem I noticed was the small tray at the bottom of the feeder. It fills with dislodged seeds and shells that rot and mildew quickly. This then spreads and begins rotting ALL of the seed at the bottom of the feeder.

I then discovered that the seeds on the inside of the screen were mildewing prematurely. Rather than risk feeding my birds mildewed seed I ended up throwing a LOT of thistle seed away and that stuff isn't cheap!

I finally replaced it with a inexpensive plastic finch feeder with small seed ports. The plastic keeps the seed drier and I haven't had the mildew problem I did with this open mesh feeder.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stokes Screen Finch Feeder, February 10, 2010
This review is from: Stokes Select 38171 Finch Screen Feeder (Lawn & Patio)
This feeder is great. We own one and it has attracted a great many finch and cardinals, and unfortunately, some squirrels. I've seen at one time at least 6 or 7 on the feeder. If put in a small tree, they flock to the tree and take turns feeding. Easy to fill, and easy to clean. It is well made. To the comments about spillage. Just about any feeder will have some. I've noticed that the spillage is cleaned up by other birds. We are about to purchase 2 more of these. This is a simple way to allow more birds to gather. Highly recommend this product. I think several of these rather than the magnum is a better way to go because they can be spread out.

i too had high hopes for this feeder. goldfinches will not come to it like the droll yankee tube feeder i swapped it out with. the seed gets wet, what a waste. i contacted the manufacturer and never received a reply. when i removed this feeder and once again placed the droll yankee tube feeder up the finches came back right away. thought it would be a good feeder to use as a rotation feeder, but i guess i'll just buy a second droll yankee and get rid of this one-and no, i don't work for droll yankee.

5.0 out of 5 stars Less waste, happier birds!, August 26, 2010
This review is from: Stokes Select 38171 Finch Screen Feeder (Lawn & Patio)
I have been using the socks to feed our many goldfinches. The socks wear out within a few weeks and there is a lot of waste; about 50% of the seed ends up on the ground. I purchased this feeder last week and am thoroughly pleased. There is very little waste; very little seed is on the ground, it falls into the tray and the finches eat it from there. It is easier to fill than the socks. Right now there are nine goldfinches at this feeder. I can't imagine having trouble with mold on this unless I had very few birds - I need to refill every three days or so. Thistle seed is expensive, but I really enjoy watching the birds. I think I will save a lot of money in the long run by using this feeder rather than socks.

The Finch Screen Feeder was shipped and arrived as promised, in excellent condition. I'm very pleased with the feeder. The tray is a good depth and has tiny little drainage holes. The finch seem to love it too - several can feed at one time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Third feeder, May 15, 2010

This is our third feeder for those who can't find a spot on the triple tube or the bigger screen feeder. The raccoons don't seem to bother this one either which pleases us to no end.
