5.0 out of 5 stars The greatest Pastoral performance ever recorded, July 12, 2007

This review is from: Stokowski: Beethoven: Symphony No. 6 "Pastoral"; Liszt: Hungarian Rhapsodies Nos. 1, 2, 3 (Audio CD)
Leopold Stokowski was one of the three or four greatest conductors of the 20th century, and quite possibly THE greatest. The performances presented on this CD were originally presented on LPs and, thus, have long been unavailable. They have only recently been made available on this remastered CD by the joint and loving efforts of Cala Records and The Leopold Stokowski Society (of which I am a member). The Liszt Hungarian Rhapsodies are quite pleasant bonuses, but the major work on this CD is Stokowski's magnificent performance of Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony -- the finest performance of this masterpiece I have ever heard. If you are one of the many people who love this great symphony please get this recording of it while it is still available. It is one of the dozen or so greatest performances of any work I have ever heard.

Incidentally many people may be familiar with the abbreviated version of the Pastoral Symphony conducted by Stokowski in Walt Disney's classic film Fantasia. Pleasant though that performance was, it is surpassed by the complete performance presented on this disc.

This review is from: Stokowski: Beethoven: Symphony No. 6 "Pastoral"; Liszt: Hungarian Rhapsodies Nos. 1, 2, 3 (Audio CD)
The Leopold Stokowski Society has an ongoing project of releasing CDs of many of the great Maestro's recordings, and for this they are to be thanked. All of the volumes that I have seen are superbly presented, with good sound presentation and excellent notes. The record under discussion is no exception...

...This MAY be the finest Beethoven's Sixth I have ever heard. The other reviewer went into detail quite well, so I shant bore with repetition. The filler tracks of the first three of Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsodies are well worth hearing. If I happen to prefer the original piano versions, that does not detract from the orchestral transcriptions. I still can't listen to the Second without thinking of Tom and Jerry...

All-in-all, a wonderfully done album of a classic performance. Enjoy...
