5.0 out of 5 stars There are substantive reasons why this CD is great, July 12, 2000

This review is from: Stokowski Conducts Holst, Ravel & Stravinsky (Audio CD)
Surprisingly, Stoky caught some flak in the national pressabout this Holst when it came out about 1959. It IS radicallydifferent than other approaches, but Stoky is well within compositional bounds with what he does. In some ways, his more literal, elemental concept of the work gives us more. More than any other maestro, Stoky seems interested in the rhythmic qualities of the work, overlaid by his usual attention to color. The Los Angeles Philharmonic gives Stoky its considerable best, so much so that this became a milestone recording for the orchestra. The Ravel is a little more problematic. Here we have some rythmic slackness, some parting out, and some sag, but there's no doubting Stoky's commitment to the music, and the French National Radio Orchestra is right in it with him. It's not classic Ravel; it IS classic Stokowski. I don't think anyone would pick the Berlin Philharmonic as a great vehicle for Stravinsky, but Stoky works with it enough to get its considerable powers to produce an excellent result. This is not ballet-Stravinsky, the currently pervading directorial approach. This is very much sonic picture-painting in the great tradition of Rimsky-Korsakoff. This is a fascinating look into a side of Stravinsky that's often forgotten or overlooked. In summary, this outstanding Stokowksi reissue is one that showcases the conductor at his inspired best, and reaffirms that his stature was retained AWAY from Philadelphia. The sound is beautiful, deluxe, natural old Capitol sound that will please everyone with its sonic spread and natural blend.

I fist bought this CD, so I could get the Planets, but latter I listend to the Stravinsky Suite, and I discovered what a gem this CD was. While Stokowski might not be for everybody the interpretations on this CD are amazing. This CD is highly recomended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "Planets" for the ages, January 12, 2000

The best, most powerful and perfect recording of "The Planets" on...the planet. The first track left me drained; I dare anyone to come up with a more bone-chilling "Mars." Highest recommendation.
