Very good, but the Naxos releases are better,

This review is from: Stokowski's Symphonic Bach, Vol. 2 (Audio CD)
This, the second installment of Stokowski's Symphonic transcriptions of Bach's (mostly organ) works is very good indeed, but I think the Naxos volumes recorded with the excellent Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra Stokowski: Bach Orchestral Transcriptions, Stokowski: Bach Transcriptions, Vol. 2, are better both acoustically and in price, with comparable repertoire.
Don't get me wrong, the Chandos issue is very good, but when a direct comparison is made, even disregarding price, I still would opt for the Naxos editions. They even sound better than the Chandos SA-CD collection of several conductor's orchestral transcriptions Bach: The Conductors' Transcriptions [Hybrid SACD], despite the higher resolution and surround sound that the SA-CD format offers, which is quite a feat. So, if you are looking for the best sounding versions of Stokowski's Bach transcriptions, listen to the excellent Naxos red book CDs. |
