From the Inside Flap

Coming in here had been a BFM. Big f'ing mistake. She should have just waited in the car...

"I miss you." Closing her eyes, she whispered, "Don't."

His lips brushed across her brow. "Don't want? Tell you that I miss you? Miss us?"

"Us?" She laughed hollowly as she turned to face him. "There is no us, remember? You said that. There's me...and there's you...and sometimes we're together, but there's no us."

His gaze held hers. "I never wanted it to be that way. And maybe there was more of an us than I realized. Seeing you..." he paused, took a deep breath. "Seeing you just drives that home."

Those intense, hypnotic eyes held hers. Her heart kicked up a few beats, stealing her breath away. As he started to dip his head, Shay stood there, frozen. Shit. What now...

His mouth, so warm, brushed against hers. She gasped and then almost wished she hadn't as he used that opportunity to tease the inside of her lips with his tongue, moving deeper and deeper. His hands came around her waist, tugging her closer.

This is a bad idea...

The warning was already screaming in her head. She couldn't give him what he needed. And he couldn't accept what she had to give. They would just hurt each other again--

Tearing her mouth away, Shay ducked to the side. "We...we can't do this."

She pressed a hand to her buzzing lips. "I'm just getting to where I'm used to going through the days without you calling. I'm just getting to where I can pass a few nights without dreaming about you." Liar--

Well, she did manage to go a few nights, she told herself. Usually, on those nights, she had nightmares, but so what? She wasn't dreaming of Elliot and that was all that counted, right?

"Shay..." He reached up and touched her shoulder.

But she didn't want to hear what he had to say. She wasn't going through this again. He needed things she couldn't give him...and it hurt. She wasn't whole inside and she had to accept that and stop pretending otherwise, and it hurt.

Stooping down, she grabbed the basket of books from where he'd placed them on the floor. Without looking back at him, she headed for the front of the store.

She had to get out of here. She could pay for her damn books and meet Lorna at the café. It was two doors down--she could walk two doors.

Maybe not well. She was already weaving a little, lethargy and weakness still pervading her body, but she damn well wasn't going to linger around--

She stumbled, her feet all but giving out under her. Crashing into a book dump just next to her, she flung out a hand, but there was nothing to grab. Books from the display went flying and just before she would have crashed to the floor, a pair of strong, steady hands gripped her waist. "I've got you," Elliot murmured.

I've got you...

The room stopped spinning around her, even though her legs still felt like spaghetti noodles. Her heart slowed back down to its normal speed for a few seconds, before embarrassment settled in. Swallowing, she closed her eyes and reached for some level of control.

Stumbling all over the place.

Running away from Elliot.

She needed to get herself together.

Sucking in a desperate drought of air, she blew it back out. Carefully, she eased away from Elliot, checking her legs--okay, she could walk. This was good.

This was...bad. Grimacing at the bookdump she'd knocked over, she opened her mouth to apologize. The display had been holding a lot of books, she thought inanely. Foil lettering on one of them caught her eyes.

Lettering the shade of blood.

Familiar...

Her stomach dropped to her knees, and the waning strength in her abused body disappeared completely. Sinking to her knees, she reached out to touch one of the books.

"Shay, I'll pick it up," Elliot said.

His voice seemed to come to her from a tunnel. Her blood roared in her ears and black dots danced in front of her eyes for a long, ugly second. Stop it, Shay--breathe!

No more panic attacks. She didn't do panic attacks any more.

No.

This...this wasn't happening.

5.0 out of 5 stars HUGE emotional rollercoaster October 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Shiloh Walker is one of my favorite authors. Sometimes, I let stuff build up inside of myself for too long and I need to read a book that will let me cry it all out. I can always count on Ms. Walker to provide that release for me. This book was no exception. It was a huge emotional rollercoaster.

Shay Morgan has dealt with more in her life than anyone ever should, and most by the time she was 16. She doesn't even remember half of it. She is so lonely after the break-up with Elliot. She couldn't open up to him and tell him about her past, and he got tired of waiting for her to.

Then Shay finds out someone is trying to take over the life she has built for herself. They have been signing her books, setting up a Facebook page, a twitter account and a blog. Then they cross the line, they bring Elliot into and threaten his lively hood by accusing him of rape.

There are so many twists and turns in this book. It started out kind of slow, but then the twists started coming and my head was spinning. Shay is a very strong woman. Anyone who could go through everything she has and come out sane has to be. She sees herself as a coward though. Most people would just crumble if they had that much crap coming at them, and coming from all different directions.

I love a romantic suspense story that has you guessing until almost the end. Shiloh always delivers on that end. Stolen kept spinning until I didn't who was what. I loved it! Keep up the incredible work Shiloh!

Format:Mass Market Paperback
Stolen is slightly disturbing, dark, and gruesome as the heroine's meticulously structured life unravels. As with many heroines with dark pasts, Shay Morgan survived an event that would drive most people insane. She's a survivor who did not remain whole.

Shay discovered a limiting way to cope with her fears and found success as a published writer. Her claustrophobic lifestyle effectively melds with Earth's Ends, Alaska; the small town inhabited by the man who patiently wooed her and lost hope for a meaningful relationship. Shay's computer is her main connection to the world. It's mostly through this machine that she watches her life seized, the stress of which exacerbates her nightmares into new and darker territory.

When a heroine has a dark past it typically means she has suffered abuse of some form. This is true for Shay. It would have been grueling to read the horrors she suffered in its entirety, but Ms. Walker spares us that pain. Her abuse is revealed in quick flashbacks, nightmares, and journaling with the careful use of metaphors. The intense revelations reveal Shay as an emotionally strong yet damaged heroine, as the life-changing event would have put most people into a mental institution or long-time psychiatric care. I was very curious about her time between the event and her present time, but the information wasn't necessary to make this story effective.

Stolen is focused on Shay's present dilemma of someone stealing her identity, along with her long-buried memories floating to the surface. Someone is taking over her life and Shay will fight for it. This is where the heroine becomes proactive and not a shadow person incapable of functioning outside her office. It was a relief to realize Shay was someone I could root for and a heroine capable of having a convincing romance.

Elliot Winter is believable hero for this damaged heroine. Shay and Elliot have two years of history before this story begins. Shay has a patient, intuitive, compassionate, and loving hero. He also happens to be ex-military lending him an `alpha' like veneer some readers love. [Note to fans: He co-owns a bookstore with his sister and loves to read. This is a good thing!]

The pacing is steady and tension-filled. The villain maintains a steady presence and will keep readers guessing. I was a little disappointed the Alaska setting wasn't used to its full advantage. I thought something more was going to be done with it. A claustrophobic atmosphere similar to the Al Pacino movie "Insomnia" would have been edgy, but it wasn't the direction the author chose. (Who am I to say? I'm only a reader/movie junkie that loves a good thriller!)

The story did fizzle near the end as the climax neared, but I really enjoyed reading my first Shiloh Walker romantic suspense and would recommend it to fans of this sub-genre. It was a thrill to read and played like a movie in my mind, which is always a good feeling in my book!

Final Verdict: Recommended Read

3.0 out of 5 stars An Appealing Novel November 9, 2012
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Stolen by Shiloh Walker

This could have been classified as a `horror' novel - the heck with trying to classify it as romantic/ suspense. As a matter of fact this book takes what are the normal rules for a romance and pretty much throws them all out the window. This book is written in a manner that very much reminded me of a Nora Roberts novel and I couldn't seem to get by this similarity. "Angels Falls".

While this was a good novel and its idea should have been great; I found that I wasn't as enthralled with it as much as I should have been. Stolen is a novel that bases most of its plot on someone taking over the female protagonist's identity and alienating Shay (the protagonist) from anyone else in her life. It also serves to dreg up for shay all the most horrible aspects of her youth; and believe me me they are freakishly horrible aspects. It may have been better for us if the author didn't just sort of slide over Shay's past and pulled this novel into the full `horror' genre instead of this half-way book. This novel also shows just what a big influence that things like FaceBook and Twitter has over much of our lives.

There was too little interaction between real characters and too much inner -dialoguing, angst, recriminations and beating ones-self up over events that they could not and never will be able to, have changed.

I can easily see how this novel is going to appeal to all kinds of readers.
