5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing
I am a huge fan of Annette LaPointes. Her gift for words is amazing. Everything is subtle and understated, but lyrical in its own way.
This is one of my favorite examples:
Tim is only tangentially her friend. They intersected in Saskatoon's geek network. It's a layer of the city Rowan doesn't often get to see; he missed it by skipping university. All the...

1.0 out of 5 stars What's la pointe, Annette?
I made it through this book solely because it was a choice of my book club. I imagine we'll all rip it to shreds at our discussion. I hated it. Totally unengaging story about unengaging characters. The protagonist is too hip for words, he's the quiet type, of course. He's ultra competent at any "off grid" activity, no matter if he's 10, he can still pick locks and...

Tim is only tangentially her friend. They intersected in Saskatoon's geek network. It's a layer of the city Rowan doesn't often get to see; he missed it by skipping university. All the engineers, a cross-section of the computer guys, and their girlfriends and exes and gaming partners have locked into their own tribe. They're producing strange kids at an alarming rate, but none of them are stupid.

I bought this book last year and have reread it several times. If you aren't threatened by descriptions of alternative lifestyles I would highly recommend this book.

The protagonist is too hip for words, he's the quiet type, of course. He's ultra competent at any "off grid" activity, no matter if he's 10, he can still pick locks and assemble difficult electronics and make robots. Ludicrous is the other word that comes to mind. He's queer, (even though he starts out picking up a woman - why? who can say? Not Ms. LaPointe) but that's not enough to carry the novel. His relationships are unfathomable and unexplained. I got nothing from this book.
