5.0 out of 5 stars Straight to heart!, December 29, 2005
Two brothers are sent to a children 's home, due her nasty mother supports her life thanks to the earnings of her own daughter 's services as prostitute since she was nine years old. An officer, (who is even single) gifted with opened heart will experience a true transformation along the trip from Milan to Sicily; and knowing the painful future that waits fir them opens his heart and shows them those little pleasures, the human warmth, love and affective candor they deserved by far, after such miserable childhood.

A brutal portrait, a true accusing finger to some social stratums who still do not seem to realize the perennial wound they are sealing in the souls of their children.

Watching this movie, you can feel the childhood ` s sorrowful scream coming from distant films such as Zero in conduct, Germany year zero, Forbidden games, Ivan 's childhood, 400 blows, Kolya or Central Station has not concluded yet . There is still a cruel and merciless ethical deficit in the soul of certain human beings, whose designation by itself is quite doubtful.

A haunting and absorbing picture, told with the possible austerity but loaded of profound painful and redemption 's sense.

And remember the last dialogue of the child: "Maybe there is a Foot ball Stadium in our new home"

It is still unbelievable after so many elapsed years I am the first person to recommend one of the Fifty jeweled films of the Decade and worst even, this gem has not been released in DVD format yet.

Very engrossing film about a young police officer and two children whose mother made the sister, at age nine, a prostitute. Lead male very appealing in an innocent sort of male way. This film won the 1992 Cannes Film Festival. The title translates as "Stolen Children".

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificently Humane Film, September 12, 2008
This small, brilliant Italian film is about the ability to empathize, and the willingness to take resist authority for a human goal.

Marvelously shot and acted, this story of a wet behind the ears Carabinieri bending the rules to commit an act of kindness, is profoundly moving. The film captures the inner life of all involved, makes the aridity of the place palpable, and is the kind of "small" film that defines art.

5.0 out of 5 stars Il Ladro di Bambini, September 2, 2007
When I first saw this movie in the theater, the plot and the acting was stupendous. It remained engraved in my brain for this long and as another reviewer states, it should be converted from VHS format to DVD so many others can purchase/view it. It is well worth it. Questo film merita essere convertito in DVD, così chiunque potrà vederlo e apprezzarlo. Mi è rimasto in mente da quando l'ho visto al cinema (cosa che non mi succede spesso!). Vale la pena vederlo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful humanist film, shockingly unknown in the US,, September 11, 2010
This review is from: The Stolen Children (DVD)
Terribly sad Italian neo-realist tale of a young cop assigned to escort a young, abused brother and sister across country to an orphanage, and the bond that grows between them, with unexpected results.

Perhaps a bit manipulative in the middle (the damaged kids respond a little too quickly to the cop's kindness), and the lead actor has his awkward moments along with some very strong ones (all three leads were non-professional actors).

But the two kids are remarkable for their ages, and the uncompromised honesty of the ending makes up for a few convenient twists, and `easy' transitions. Overall a powerful and moving film full of humanity. It's shocking and sad to think this award winning modern Italian classic is essentially unknown, and unavailable on video in the United States.

I was fortunate enough to have seen this movie on a cable network and recorded it on VHS. It is a shame that such an award winning movie has not yet been released on DVD. I would purchase it immediately. I am thrilled that I have it on VHS (for viewing at a later time as they say) and am thrilled to have it in my collection
