Book Description

January 1, 1997
A beautiful con artist...a dangerous charade...a case of...Stolen Hearts.

From the fresh new voice of Michelle Martin comes this sparkling romance in the bestselling tradition of Jayne Ann Krentz. An ex-jewel thief pulls the con of her life, but one man is determined to catch her--and never let her get away.

For Tess Alcott, chocolate was a vice; stealing jewels was pure pleasure. So when her ruthless former "employer" turned up to coerce her into taking part in a daring heist, he didn't have to twist her arm too far. He only had to hold out the lure of the magnificent Farleigh emeralds.

To win them, all Tess needs to do is convince one sweet old lady and one grouchy, blue-blooded--and distractingly handsome--lawyer that she's the missing heiress to a fortune. But Tess doesn't realize the danger, until the infuriating lawyer beats her at her own game...and steals her most prized possession...her heart. Now Tess doesn't know which she wants more: the gorgeous emeralds or the gorgeous emerald-eyed lawyer....

Amazon.com Review

Tess Alcott is the best thief and con artist in the business. She is out to pull one last heist with the man who made her who she is today. Presenting herself as the long lost Cushman heiress, Elizabeth, she will gain access to the family and steal the Farliegh emeralds. The biggest obstacle to this plan is Luke Mansfield. As the attorney and friend of Jane Cushman, Elizabeth's grandmother, he intends to prove that Tess is a fake. From their first introduction he knows it won't be easy; Tess is a pro, and she plays it cool. Luke will need to dig deep to discover the truth--and to control his emotions, especially since he finds the beautiful con artist irresistible. All the lies and subterfuge ignite in a brilliant climax sure to surprise and satisfy readers.

From Library Journal

For somewhat reformed jewel thief Tess Alcott, life is sweet?Debussy, bubbles, chocolate, and an intriguing job with the WEB (World Enforcement Bureau). And then her past walks in the door and makes her an offer she can't refuse. A daring missing heiress scam, the emeralds of Tess's dreams, and an adversarial attorney who is too attractive by far draw Tess into the most fascinating escapade of her career, with results that are funny, passionate, and even surprising. A bright, outspoken heroine (recalling Jayne Ann Krentz's), a pace that doesn't let up, and a fresh treatment of an old plot pattern add to the charms of this book, which should appeal to readers who like their romances upbeat and well written. Martin has penned a number of earlier Regencies; this is her first contemporary.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stolen Hearts full of fun, October 10, 1997

This is a wonderful, fast-paced romance with some suspense thrown in. The book is full of wry humor, a bright, charming, con-woman for a heroine, and terrific supporting characters. The old lady and her handsome lawyer of a guard dog are able to recognize a genuine joy for life when they see it, even if it is contained in a crooked package. A fun read for an evening, and a contemporary treat from the author of The Adventurers

5.0 out of 5 stars Contemporary Romance with Intelligent, Believable Characters, July 13, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Stolen Hearts (Paperback)
I found Michelle Martin's "Stolen Hearts" to be a terrific change for her, as she has primarily written Regency Romances and this book is her first attempt at writing a contemporary romance. Her characters are well-balanced and the storyline is well-thought out, leaving no ends dangling in the end. There are a few dramatic twists during the progression of the story, which makes for a fresh, interesting read. I also liked the way she portrayed the elderly woman who the heroine is trying to con. She is a kind-hearted, spirited character, who definitely has her wits about her. This book is an enjoyable, easy, quick-read

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Romance Novel, December 12, 1999
This review is from: Stolen Hearts (Paperback)
When I started reading this book, I was unsure that it would be as good as the others I have read. I enjoyed it even more! The story seems a little like "Anastasia" but it draws you in. The twist at the end of the book is totally unexpected and makes the book even better than you can imagine. If you are a true romance novel fan you will enjoy this book--don't pass it up!
