Disc 1: Burrell (g) Reggie Johnson (b) Carl Burnett (d) 3/23/77Disc 2: Burrell (g) John Heard (b) Roy McCurdy (d) Kenneth Nash (perc) 12/79. This 2-CD set contains 2 Concord Jazz LPs: TIN TIN DEO and MOON AND SAND. MOON has a little bit more going on on it, with the added percussion and Burrell switching to accoustic guitar on some tracks, and is the better CD. Burrell has always had a warm, swinging sound, rich in tone - all of which is on display on both these discs. Not absolutely essential, but this set will give repeated pleasure.

Kenny Burrell has always been a favorite of mine for pure listening pleasure. It is his lush use of flavorful chords that prompted me to write this review. My grown son has spent much time searching for certain sounds on his guitar with remarkable success. He is constantly seeking new and flavorful chord treatments, and as I listened to KB's CD, I realized how much he could learn from this master. What a goldmine of easily followed chord treatments. Any aspiring guitar player--regardless of genre--will benefit from a study of this CD, after enjoying the sounds, of course. |
