About the Author

DIY by Default! Alex Wrekk is an Utne award nominated zinesters in Portland, Oregon who has created over 40 zines since 1995, most of which were of her personal zine Brainscan. Alex is an original and continuing organizer for the Portland Zine Symposium, a volunteer at the Independent Publishing Resource Center, has been on zine tours and taught workshops about zines at the Rock and Roll Camp for Girls and various universities and community organizations in the U.S. and Canada.

Alex lives in a century old home in North Portland with the love of her life, Paul, and some fantastic housemates. When not being completely steeped in zines Alex makes 1 &1.25 pinback buttons and other crafts to sell on her Small World Buttons site, roasts her own organic coffee, drinks and brews her own beer, cooks vegan food, tends her garden, and rides her bike.

I love it when a book about zines feels and looks like a zine. There is something delightful about the typos, the grammatical errors, even the blatant editorial problems. (Where, for instance, is page 56? The pagination goes: 1 . . . 55, 55, 57 . . . Oops!)

This is good basic advice, mostly for someone new to zines. There isn't a lot here by way of inspiration so if you don't already have some idea of what you want your zine to be about this book isn't going to necessarily get you jumping into the fray. But there are resources, many websites and such, shared which may offer some inspiration.

I can definitely see how this book is a great resource for teachers. I especially appreciate Wrekk taking the time to warn the reader that not everyone who wants to read your zine is someone with whom you would want to be friends in real life. Predators are everywhere and any facet of society that attracts younger people will, unfortunately, draw the attention of the less than savory.

A great little book that I hope will continue to be published, with or without that mysteriously missing page 56.

A great DIY book and testament to 'zine culture. More of a pep-talk than anything (at least for myself, who is pretty familiar with 'zines), as the "how to make a zine" lesson rightly amounts to little more than "get some paper, put stuff on it however you want, make it look like something bound... or not".

Nevertheless, it represents the culture well and provides a lot of great ideas! Given the nature of the work, I must urge potential readers to buy it from another, less massively corporate source though - AK Press has it in their online catalog.

This is probably one of the best books on creating and distributing your own zine. It's a tough thing to do because a zine can be so many things. I think it's the best because it really gives you the bones on the subject and leaves the rest up to you. The distribution information is worth the price of the book itself. I supplied illustrations for a zine years ago being made by a friend of mine from college and I bought this book just on the fact that I've never seen a book about zines before (talk about sheltered). For what it costs vs what you're getting I was very pleasantly surprised.
