Book Description

March 1, 2003
A Stone Laid in Zion takes place in Caesarea Maritima and Jerusalem at the time of Passover, 33 A.D. Jesus' separate encounters with two people, Governor Pontius Pilate and his wife Claudia, set the stage for The Eagle and the Stone, a series of novels that evoke the atmosphere of the first century. Their contrasting responses to Jesus--hers, faith, which leads to a life-giving miracle; and his, doubt, leading to a sentence of death--have consequences which will affect not only their own lives but the beginnings of the Early Church among the Gentiles.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

A Stone Laid in Zion is the first in a series of biblical historical novels called The Eagle and the Stone, which deal with the Early Church as seen through the eyes of the Romans.

About the Author

Born in Massachusetts and brought up in Florida, Ellen Whitman Bynum holds undergraduate degrees in English and Spanish, with a minor in French, from Florida State University at Tallahassee. After marrying Joseph Bynum, moving to Jacksonville, North Carolina, and having three children, she attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she received a master's degree in Education with a major in Spanish. She taught Spanish in the public schools in Jacksonville until retirement. Since then, she and her husband have enjoyed foreign and domestic travel, as well as visiting their children and grandchildren. It was an early trip to the Holy Land where she caught the ideas that soon led to the writing of this, her first book, one of a series of biblical historical novels entitled The Eagle and the Stone.

5.0 out of 5 stars God's Pen?, February 15, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: A Stone Laid in Zion (Paperback)
This brilliant book reveals vividly, life in Caesarea at the time of Christ, written intelligently through an excellent command of language, with colorful details and perhaps, God's own pen. Research on this book must have been tremendous, but most assuredly, God's hand was on the author's shoulder, offering inspiration and encouragement. The short chapters were very much appreciated, because they provided wonderful stopping places when demands on time prohibited a lengthier read. My only disappointment was that the second book in the series is not yet available for purchase!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read for Anyone, December 18, 2003
This review is from: A Stone Laid in Zion (Paperback)
Imagine going down in history as the man who sentenced the Son of God to death? An interesting read that helped me better understand Pilate as well as the political and religious mix in Palestine during the last week before Jesus' crucifixion.
