5.0 out of 5 stars Angie Stone is the Bomb!!!
I honestly have to say that Angie Stone is the most underated singer out there today. The CD Stone Love is phenomenal even even though I prefer her prior cd Mahogany Soul. It's amazing how people think that people who sing off-tune like Ashanti are talented and critize real talents like Angie Stone. My favorites on this cd are My Man with Floetry(Very funky track), I...

3.0 out of 5 stars Music Great . . . Actual CD Disappointing
I'm a casual Angie Stone fan, and I was blown away by this disc. It's an amazing third effort from Stone. "Stone Love" covers several genres of R&B/Soul music, from the currently popular "neo-soul" to Betty Wright-influenced cuts and soul with a pop edge. My biggest complaint--big enough for a two-star loss--is the copy-protection on the CD. I could only rip the disc...

It's amazing how people think that people who sing off-tune like Ashanti are talented and critize real talents like Angie Stone. My favorites on this cd are My Man with Floetry(Very funky track), I wanna thank ya(version w/o rap), U-haul, That kind of Love,Karma. In fact I love almost every song on this album and you know that is very rare these days, most cds out there have only one good song. My advice to any real music lover out there, if you don't have Angie's previous two cd's go pick them up and you won't be dissappointed. Whenever she's in your town check her out because she's phenomenal on stage...

4.0 out of 5 stars No Stone Unturned., July 23, 2004
By
This review is from: Stone Love (Audio CD)
Nobody would disagree that Angie Stone would make a great soul singer of the 1970s. Her musical style pays so much homage to that decade, that many of her songs, save the modern production, sound as if they could have been released in 1974 and not 2004. But while her music may be old school, it's definitely not old fashioned. Her third and most consistent album, "Stone Love," is overall more favorable than 2001's solid (if long-winded) "Mahogany Soul." There's nothing here that tops "Brother" or the knockout "Bottles and Cans," but at 55 minutes, it's lean and to the point with no throwaway songs. She ropes in Floetry for "My Man," teams up with fellow nu soul-er Anthony Hamilton on the standout "Stay For a While," emotes with conviction on "You Don't Love Me," and delivers a killer breakup jam "U-Haul," which, as the title implies, finds our heroine moving out of her man's crib and life. While Stone often wears her soul influences on her sleeve, there's enough good stuff on "Stone Love" to make it worth checking out.

"Stone Love" covers several genres of R&B/Soul music, from the currently popular "neo-soul" to Betty Wright-influenced cuts and soul with a pop edge. My biggest complaint--big enough for a two-star loss--is the copy-protection on the CD. I could only rip the disc to my PC in WMA format, which means I couldn't transfer it to my iPod. I can understand artists and especially greedy record companies not wanting consumers to "bootleg" albums, but I've been prevented from using this music in a legal manner. My only legal option is to purchase the album again on iTunes, but I am instead forced to download the album from a p2p. Thanks a lot, J records!

4.0 out of 5 stars What's REALLY going on?, March 22, 2005
This review is from: Stone Love (Audio CD)
I am also an Angie Stone fan. I'd even ventue to say die-hard. I have total sympathy for her desire to protect her art from bootleggers. I mean, the lady can blow! And there's nothing "Neo" about the soul she brings to the table. Very old-school... That's what stands out so much about her as an artist. However, letting J Records copy-protect her cd blows! As it stands, what could have been high art has become another piece of clutter on my desk. J Records should recognize that there are people like me who won't buy another album from Angie because of their heavy-handed approach. I don't know about the rest of the world, but when labels begin to take options away from consumers, rather than finding proactive solutions to their artist's technological challenges, it can't possibly be viewed as a good thing.

My review: This CD makes an excellent coaster, reflective frisbee, and/or cheese slicer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Angie Stone....RULES, July 15, 2004

This review is from: Stone Love (Audio CD)
This is the most satisfying CD that I have bought so far in 2004, just slightly better than my other 5 star--Lizz Wright's SALT.

Angie Stone is such a PRO, such a great songwriter and so damned REAL. The woman has a direct line to the old school SOUL vibe and she turns it on better than anybody!!! There's only 2 tracks on here that I sometimes skip over, but the rest of the CD is so fantastic, so smooth and so enjoyable that I just have to represent with 5 stars. Angie Stone is the bomb.

My favorite cuts are..U-Haul, Remy Red, I Wanna Thank You, Stay for a While (with Anthony Hamilton), Karma, Cinderella Ball'n and Lover's Ghetto. Every damn one of them songs is a classic!!

Miss Stone, my hats off to you. You brought it for real this time. Excellent!!!

And don't forget to pick up SALT by Lizz Wright. Another sure-fire excellent CD (but it's Jazz).

4.0 out of 5 stars Mature Music For Mature Listeners - Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiice!!!!!!, July 13, 2004

While I have all of Angie's CDs, this is the first one I have reviewed. I am glad because I would much rather give an overview of a remarkable artist rather than resort to picking out this cut and that cut which ultimately ends up being a classic example of not being able to see the forest for the trees.

Ms. Stone is a remarkable artist whom the music world has benefited from by her entrance. The biggest observation is that she is not a sampler but acutally a musical historian. She has taken classic R&B meoldies and fused them with fresh lyrics and creative vocal arrangments as an homage to excellent old school melodies. The end result is that she is keeping excellent music in the forefront, showing our young people where our musical roots come from and continues to show us that there is no substitute for just plain good music. Notice her infusions of "Vision" ("Sun Goddess", by Earth, Wind, & Fire), "I Wish I Didn't Miss You So Much" ("Backstabbers" by the O'Jays, "No More Rain in This Cloud" ("Neither One of Us Wants To Be the First To Say Goodbye" realized by Gladys Knight) and last but not least, "Slippery Shoes" which is indicative of a huge Marvin Gaye/What's Goin'On influence.

It is quite obvious Ms. Stone not only appreicates her musical roots but takes care to reinvent classic musical themes in their best light. She is a wonderful lyricist, a powerful vocalist, and an incomparable vocal arranger.

On this her 3rd outing, she is in top form. You should be allowed to listen and pick your favorite moments. As a whole, this is a cohesive, smooth, sensual set that old school aficianados will appreciate again and again. And if you have had the pleasure of hearing Ms. Stone live, I don't have to convince you that the woman is indeed a formidable talent whose past work I cherish and whose future projects I will eagerly anticipate.

5.0 out of 5 stars I wanna Thank You Too Angie, July 12, 2004
This review is from: Stone Love (Audio CD)
Angie Stone is a man's dream....a sista who know's how to put a brotha in the mood. Angie keeps pumping out those vibes that take a brotha back to a time when being in love meant something. Last time out Sista Stone gave us "Brotha" and this time outdid herself with "I Wanna Thank Ya." The whole cd jams in that type of oldschool vibe from beginning to end. And for those who might think I'm feelin Angie cause I'm oldschool.....ya'll right. I'm one of those brothas who can still appreciate being taken back to the days of "Stone Love."

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Disc..., July 7, 2004
By
This review is from: Stone Love (Audio CD)
I've always enjoyed Angie Stone. She's got a great voice, no doubt... the music prior to this album has been okay at best. "Wish I Didn't Miss You" was a great song and was an excellent remix. But with Stone Love, Angie Stone has not only shown off her fantastic vocals but she has combined them with some great songs that are just really great to listen to.

The album starts of with a funky soulful song with Snoop Dog which is just begs you to shake your hips... the album continues through some slightly different genres, really showing that Angie Stone is here for a while.

I didn't give it 5 stars only b/c the disc didn't knock me off my a*s. Great disc overall... .i love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better Than The US Version, June 8, 2005
This review is from: Stone Love (Audio CD)
This Japanese Version of "Stone Love" is a lot better than the US Version. IT IS NOT COPY PROTECTED therefore, it can be transfered to I pods, mp3 player, etc. So if you need a physical copy to transfer to a portable music player, This Japan Import is the way to go.
