Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Anglesey's concept has verve; the time seems to have come for her brief anthology of contemporary female U.S. poets who write in English, presented here in dual English/Spanish translation for the benefit of domestic bilingual education programs-and, hopefully, also for that of Central Americans. An editor of the Voice Literary Supplement who has several other anthologies to her credit, Anglesey affirms cultural diversity in her selection, and vigorously roams the themes of protest, oppression, identity, and self-fulfillment, featuring work by Ntozake Shange, Rita Dove, Carolyn Forche, Jayne Cortez, and herself (including her own beautiful lyric, "Holding Him"), along with nine others. It's a very appealing collection. The Spanish translations, produced by two of Anglesey's Central American colleagues in consultation with her, contribute the sensuality of Spanish to poetry that generally receives it well, although the translators sometimes resist the sense of surprise in imagery and diction found in the originals.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite anthologies, June 4, 2002
By
Sarah Gibson (Greensboro, NC United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Stone on Stone/Piedra sobre piedra (Paperback)
I read a lot of poetry, and this collection contains some of the most thought-provoking and lyrical poems I have seen anywhere(by some of the most famous modern poets). The book does include work by writers of different ethnic backgrounds, and the images and ideas in the poems are clearly rooted in the women's ethnicities. The issues in the poems include war, civil rights, feminism, sex, love, rape, and death.
Also, I do not speak Spanish fluently, but I enjoyed reading the poems in both languages... Poetry is a wonderful place to begin to appreciate the beauty and complexity of other languages.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys well-written poetry or who is in the process of learning Spanish.

Also, I do not speak Spanish fluently, but I enjoyed reading the poems in both languages; the United States is already a multilingual country and soon I believe Spanish will be the second official language. Poetry is a wonderful place to begin to appreciate the beauty and complexity of other languages.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys well-written poetry or who is in the process of learning Spanish.

1.0 out of 5 stars Diverse heritages? I beg to differ!, May 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Stone on Stone/Piedra sobre piedra (Paperback)
I was very excited to be reading this book, for a women in literature class. But as I got into the poetry I was greatly upset that they poems focused on "SPANISH" what about, french, celtic, polish, italian, etc. I was not impressed by the way the poems were expressed collected.
