4.0 out of 5 stars Surreal Sensual Romance, September 18, 2007

This review is from: Cast in Stone (Quinguard Immortals) (Paperback)
In a genre filled to capacity with vampire stories and authors pumping out kick-ass action romances, Cast in Stone sets itself apart, enveloping the reader right from the beginning in a sensual atmosphere filled with romance and magic.

Cast in Stone has a very unique and creative premise, quite different from the many urban fantasies currently flooding the market. The hero, a medieval warrior, has suffered under a curse for centuries. Each night he turns to stone, enduring untold agonies as he does so. Each day he searches for the rest of his band of warriors - his Quinguard - who have also been cursed.

Although the side benefit of this curse is immortality - if he dies while in human form, he nonetheless awakens the next morning in his usual place - he cannot enjoy it. He is alone, and tortured by the knowledge that his men suffer the same fate, scattered around the world.

At last he finds the heroine, a healer who can break his curse, if she agrees to perform the ritual of mingling with him. But first he must convince her that he has done no harm, that he does not deserve this punishment, for her family has always told her to watch for someone like him - she has been expecting him and believes him to be evil.

It is a breath of fresh air to find a book so replete with everything one could ask for in a paranormal romance - evil curses, ageless villains and compelling heroes - without falling back on the cliches that so many others rely upon.

The disadvantage, however, is that the surreal feeling evoked by the writing style does leave one feeling a bit remote from real life, which may prevent some readers from fully engaging in the story. A willingness to immerse oneself in the atmosphere and allow a disconnect from reality is in order to truly enjoy this book.

Overall, this is an excellent and unusual paranormal story with well-developed characters, plot and settings. The author also does an excellent job of creating quite sensual scenes without the use of overly explicit language, which fits perfectly with the surreal feeling.

Set aside some quiet time alone for this one - a perfect book to enjoy in a hot bath, or snuggled up on a chilly night.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sensual and gothic. Wow., July 26, 2007
By
This review is from: Cast in Stone (Quinguard Immortals) (Paperback)
This is the BEST paranormal romance I think I've ever read. Finally, a fresh premise in the subgenre! Julen is descended from an ancient line of Dacian wolf warriors, cursed seven hundred years before to turn to stone by sunset. Only one woman can heal him---but Sofia is obligated to destroy him instead. The attraction and tension are palpable. The language is magical. The plot is executed perfectly. These characters are AMAZING. Julen is the most devastatingly fascinating hero I've read in ages, and Sofia is just the perfect match for all his dark mystery.

I found this book via a general fiction novel by the same author, but I primarily read romances. If "Cast in Stone" doesn't get a P.E.A.R.L. award next year, I don't know what would.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book!, September 4, 2007
This review is from: Cast in Stone (Quinguard Immortals) (Paperback)
The first thing you will notice is how original and unique the premise is for the storyline. The characters were very sexy, and I was completely pulled in by their charisma and actions. The writing itself is quite clever, full of intelligence and wit. I found myself laughing out loud a few times as Sophia said something that just floored me, it was so great.

The day after I started the book, I called off work just so I could finish it that day :)

I really hope everyone picks this book up and gives it a read.

I haven't read very many paranormal books but this one really intrigued me. I quickly became entranced with the story and concept, along with the characters and seeing the author's descriptions came alive. She did a great job, will be reading her sequel 'The Stone's Release' soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful and Unique Love Story, March 8, 2008
By
This review is from: Cast in Stone (Quinguard Immortals) (Paperback)
This beautiful love story is unlike any I have read before. The premise is unique and fresh, and the characters, hauntingly lifelike.

For hundreds of years, Julen, the leader of an ancient band of warriors has endured a nightly punishment in which his body is rendered stone. He waits in agony for the promised healer who will free him from this curse. When he discovers this healer in Sophia, the owner of a Boston Coffee Shop, Julen must convince her that he is deserving of her healing, though she is bound by a family obligation to destroy him.

Superbly written, this book contains both edge of the seat suspense and powerfully moving love scenes that will restore your faith in true love. The imagery is breathtaking, making the reader feel the clamor of a busy city street, the loneliness of a secluded graveyard at night. Kerry Jones is an extremely talented storyteller and I anxiously look forward to the next book in the Quinguard Immortals series.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 Hearts from TRS!, November 4, 2009
By
This review is from: Cast in Stone (Quinguard Immortals) (Paperback)
"Book one in the Quinguard Immortal Series is a really great and different paranormal which has a medieval twists along with a futuristic theme. Here we find a warrior who has suffered under a curse for over seven hundred years. Each day for him is a day filled with agonies one can only imagine. But as we will find in this story and the rest of this series, he's not alone. His quinguard, his men who were also cursed along with him, are missing and as Julian searches, he met Sofia, a healer, who he believes can break the curse that holds him captive. As he tries to convince her that he is innocent of any wrong doing, Sofia realizes that he is so much more than just a hero. He shows her just how much she means to him with his warm passionate ways and by letting Sofia set the pace of their relationship without rushing her into any kind of physical relationship she didn't want. Within the pages of this excellent and well developed story, we learn that their love will come with a price. A price that will consume Sofia causing Julian to endure so much more anguish and heartbreak. But the solution is so much closer than Julian and Sofia can imagine." - Margo

Her descriptions as to what the main character Julen looks like and the emotions or stuff he goes through "every night" is unclear.

The interaction between him and the "healer" is mechanically and lackluster.

Is he a gargoyle, the reason why the Quingard was punished seems trivial.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cast in Stone by Kerry A Jones, June 20, 2008
By
This review is from: Cast in Stone (Quinguard Immortals) (Paperback)
"Cast in Stone" by Kerry A Jones is a hell of a story. Although not erotica, it's still a pretty hot read and I loved the storyline. I'm practically giddy since this is my second new author this week with a new take on the paranormal world. This is book one of 'The Quinguard Immortals' series and the next book "The Stone's Release" is coming out in "early autumn" according to her website and I plan to buy it as soon as it hits the shelves!

The Quinguard was/is a group of 5 men, each with some special paranormal ability. They were the Warrior, the Seer, the Healer, the Weapons-maker, and the Captain. They were trusted by Church and Crown to protect and defend. Then they were betrayed and cursed by black magic. This first book is the story of Julen, the Captain. He's a man by day and stone by night-a gargoyle, but not. Every time he becomes established and comfortable in a city, he wakes up in a new location...naked, alone, and lost. Then one day he sees her, to him she appears to have a blue aura and he is drawn to her.

I really had a good time with this book. There is no 'instant' relationship. Attraction of course, but neither is willing to drop their defenses at first. The story is engrossing...I just couldn't put it down. The hows and whys were fascinating and I didn't figure it all out, even with the strategic clues.

If you're looking for something new and different in paranormal romance, pick this one up!!

This book was intriguing. A solid read and something new for those trying to find different paranormal romances to read. I generally recommend it, but again it is more expensive than most paperbacks. While I enjoyed the book, not sure if it was completly worth the price.
