I was gripped from the very first page, and could not put it down! Sarah Ward takes a difficult and painful subject by the horns - no sugar coating here but also such a deep appreciation for the tangled webs we weave. The depth of these characters is so real - Donald the abusive father is not just a bad guy, but also we get a sense of his own pain and how it contributes to violence. Meant and very appropriate for young adults, this is also a must read for adults! It sheds light on a subject that is so hard for many of us to understand and will help us understand how best to help those suffering from family violence.

This book is well written with strong characters, ideas, and page turning mystery. As a brand new author, Sarah Ward is one to watch. I couldn't get enough of this young adult novel. Not too long, with a satisfying plot, and ending, it's a strong read that will keep you thinking when you finish, and waiting for her next novel. Can't wait to buy a paper copy! :)

Very good book about an important subject not easily discussed. Kept my interest, a real page turner. I recommend it for young adults and adults also.

Ward nails the voice of young teens as embodied by her heroine, Elsie Stone. Young adults can relate to Elsie because she is real - not a super hero, not a witch or vampire, or ninja rock-climber/slingshot-slayer. She's an ordinary teenager trying to deal with dysfunctional adults engaged in domestic violence. Strong - yet vulnerable, Elsie grows into her role as leader in the quest to solve the mystery of her sister's death. Along the way she learns about betrayal, jealousy, courage, sacrifice, and love. In the end she finds the truth, and her own hidden strength. A must-read for all young adults, with something extra for those struggling with domestic violence: Hope.

I did not want to put this down. It's a captivating story and easy to read. At the same time, you will find yourself thinking about the main characters even when you are not reading, and long after you have finished. This is the kind of book that will resonate with many, whether they do or do not share some of the experiences that the main character describes. There are hints of abuse in many relationships, and the kaleidoscope of abusive traits is very well laid out throughout this book. Thus, it is not only entertaining as a story, it is also an important book. The author clearly knows about what she writes, and writes about what she knows.

This book pulled me in from the first page! I was so enthralled by the family relationships that when I finished I felt the loss you experience when you have read a book where you really connect with the characters. I would highly recommend this book to others. The complicated nature of domestic violence was clearly portrayed in a way that was understandable yet not graphic. As well, the strength shown by the mother, daughter and the close friends they make created a hopeful and lasting image for me.
