Leofric, squire to Sir Garderobe, is led on a mad chase when the emerald falls out of his knight's sword and is carried off by a monkey.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-5AAn interactive picture book with a seek-and-find theme and a medieval setting. While Squire Leofric is cleaning his master's sword, the priceless emerald in its hilt falls out. The boy's pet monkey grabs it and heads off at top speed, setting Leofric, along with readers, on a search in and around the castle. Done in watercolor and ink, the illustrations on the busy double-page spreads are filled with people and objects. In addition to seeking out the jewel, children are instructed to keep track of the ghost of the sword's first owner, look for the modern devices that show up in tapestries woven by a woman who can see into the future, and follow a courtship between Sir Gawhine and the fair Eglantine, among other "medieval mix-ups." Some hints are given in the dialogue bubbles, but it takes keen eyesight and a clever mind to get through this adventure. Young readers can never get enough of this genre. A fun purchase.AEvelyn Butrico, Cold Spring Harbor Library, Greenlawn, NY

From Booklist

Gr. 2^-4. Children who enjoy scanning large, panoramic pictures for small visual clues will find new challenges in this engaging book. With a medieval setting, a story line involving an emerald missing from a knight's sword, and colorful, detailed illustrations, this oversize volume will keep kids busy for quite a while following the story and the clues as well as answering questions such as, "Can you find twin knights with socks that don't match?" The appealing illustrations, spiced with occasional speech balloons for the characters and a great deal of visual humor, extend across each bordered double-page spread. To the left of each main picture is a scroll bearing the text. Each section contains at least one anachronism, such as a blender on the groaning board. An entertaining and attractive alternative for children who have plowed through all the Waldo and I Spy books. Carolyn Phelan

My four-year-old son loves this book! He likes the "eye spy" aspect of the story and all of the clues that lead you through the book. The colorful and very detailed drawings will appeal to any child -- boy or girl. It is appropriate for his age, and I believe he will like it for a few more years. We recommend this highly.

Our grandsons are 3 and 5 and they love the challenge and the joy of finding the objects in this book. They also are getting an idea of how things worked in the medieval times. Very educational and challenging.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Stone in the Sword, February 11, 2007
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Stone In the Sword (Hardcover)
In reading The Stone in the Sword, or the Quest for a Stolen Emerald, prepare to follow an adventure requiring both wit and skill. This fantastic book is filled with many hidden objects waiting to be found by the reader! The Stone in the Sword is a masterpiece for the whole family to enjoy -- a wonderful book to have on hand for a rainy day or a moment of boredom. The story follows Loefric, a young squire who while polishing his master's sword the day before the well-known winter jousting tournament, loses a precious emerald that is afixed to the sword. As the gem falls to the ground, Loefric's michievious monkey grabs and makes off with the emerald! Loefric is soon in hot pursuit all over the castle and beyond after his pet trying to retrieve the precious stone. He soon learns that it is not just a monkey that might want an emerald, and will he recover the emerald in time?
With wonderful illustrations that lend a perfect medieval atmosphere, this book is both exciting and hard-to-put down, and requires skill and concentration to help Loefric retrieve the gem in time for the tournament! And not only does one follow Loefric in his timely quest, they have to find and identify people and things along the way!!
This book is definitely, without hesitation a 5 stars book, enjoyable for ALL ages, to be read again and again with objects to find everytime! Get this book and you will not regret it!!!
