I created a horrible mess by using pipe dope putty that contained mineral oil to seal the flanges on my faucets. In less than a week a dark stain was creeping from under the fixtures. When I took them off for a look I could see that under pressure the oil had penetrated about 1/4 inch deep!

After reading a lot of d-i-y poultice ideas, I decided to pick up one of the clay powder products. These are made of calcine clay and are pH neutral and are mixed with water. After two applications the stain was substantially lighter, but still deep. That's when I ordered this product.

The Stonetech poultice pulled out the entire stain in one try. Amazing! My granite is a light tan, and I have noticed a shadow beyond the original stain zone (others have had such an experience). That stain seems to be the remnants of the solvent. I put a fan on the sink and after 3 days it's faded to the point where only I know where it happened. If I was really concerned at this point, I believe that another clay and water poultice would pull out the last of the shadow.

In several places I have heard people remark "know your stone". Wow is that the truth. When you buy a granite top, get some spare pieces of the material that you can use for future experiments before treating a stain on your real countertop. Also, don't assume that the installer did a thorough job of sealing the top because mine did not!

I wanted to make a few remarks about poultices. The reason they work is because they create a gradient boundary that attracts the stain from the granite. To do this you need to have the region full of stain in contact with a material that contains no stain, and has the propensity to aggressively absorb the stain and any added fluid. In physics terms this is a combination of osmosis, diffusion and suction. The reason poultices work best when mixed with a liquid is that the liquid helps to bring the absorbing agent (such as talc or clay) into closer contact with the granite, and also the liquid helps to mobilize the stain within the granite. It is very important to have the poultice overlap the stain because otherwise the stain might migrate away from the poultice either by repulsion (oil versus water) or by dilution (i.e. the staining material might join with the liquid and flow somewhere else). I think that stain migration is a bigger risk when the liquid in the poultice is compatible with the stain. So, there is a bigger risk of migration with an oil stain and Stonetech than there is with an oil stain and water-based clay. That's way I strongly recommend you try to remove as much as possible with a water-based clay before using Stonetech. However, I hope this is my first and last stain disaster, so I am only speaking from one experience.

My wife left her olive oil dispenser on our granite window ledge and left a nice round stain that wouldn't come out for anything. This got it out quickly. In our bathroom, my granite was stained from our toothbrush holder and the dripping. This got it out too. I feel very confident having this product in the garage when someone has an oops on the countertops.

Stone Tech Oil Stain Remover sounded too good to be true. Just spread on a stain on your granite counter top and wait a few days. I only bought a small container thinking it was not true. Well it got the stain out easily and gave the granite a like new look.

My new granite countertop was not sealed properly and I inadvertently left an oil cup overnight on the counter resulting in a very deep 4 inch olive oil stain. I tried all the local poultice, oil remover, etc. After 4 weeks I almost gave in to sealing this counter without removing the stain. Fortunately I read somewhere that this stonetech product works. I reluctantly spent the $23.00 thinking for sure I was throwing away more money on a lost cause. After applying this thing according to instructions, I dusted the powder off after three days and no stain whatsoever. Buy this product, you will not regret it, Amazon has the best price too.

After trying all sorts of remedies for removing oil from my granite countertops I saw pretty positive reviews for this product so I decided to try it. After putting up with the sort of sickening citrus smell and having things off countertop so this stuff could dry for 72 hours...I removed it and there was absolutely no difference--the oil remained as it had. I admit the stains had been there a while and maybe because of that it is more difficult. At any rate it was worth a try but very disappointed that I followed instructions exactly and ended up spending the money and the time for no results...if it had at least faded the stains it would not have been so disappointing.

I tried a cheaper poultice several times to remove a deep set plumbers putty oil stain from my granite tiles with no success. I almost gave up and was about to tear out and replace the stained tiles but decided to search the internet for another solution. I came across StoneTech, which was recommended on another website. This poultice is pre-mixed and smells like citrus. I am so glad I spent the extra money to try this product. After applying this product only one time, the stain was almost completely gone. Applied it a second time and the stain was gone.

5.0 out of 5 stars This product saved my granite!, December 8, 2010
This review is from: StoneTech EX6-16 1-Pint Oil Stain Remover for Natural Stone (Tools & Home Improvement)
I used this product approx. 5 years ago and it literally saved my new $5000 countertop. We did a new kitchen with a beautiful brown, almost solid coloring (not a busy pattern), so any stain would show up immediately. Although the installers did a beautiful job, they never sealed the granite and I didn't know any better. We put a pizza box on the top and the next thing I knew, we had these dark stains all over. I was physically sick! I called the company and they never followed up. A friend sent his "stone"person over and he did a poultice application. Although it lightened the stain some, it actually made the margins bigger. I started on the internet and tried a couple of DIY treatments that didn't work. Stone Tech at that time had it's own web site and had a whole question and answer section. I bought a little can of the oil stain remover, and thought I have nothing to lose. By that time, I had several more stains because I didn't want to seal the granite until I got the oil stains out. One application and I couldn't believe it. The stains were completely gone! I also used the cleaner /revitalizer and love it! I can't say enough about these products I have used and am so happy I have found them again because no store within 50 miles of me sells it!

After discovering a large (5" diameter) olive oil stain on my very new Kashmir White granite kitchen countertops, I was beyond upset. I did a little research online, and after trying various "home remedies," none of which worked, I bought this product as a last-stitch effort. In short, it was the best $25 bucks I have ever spent. I applied the product according to the directions, and I left it on for just more than 72 hours. When I went to remove it, I held my breath, but the olive oil stain (which, by the way, had deeply set in over a period of weeks) was COMPLETELY GONE! I can't tell you how relieved I was to have found and taken a chance on this product. It is the real deal!

We had a big stain (2 circles, each the size of a dinner plate) on the granite of our outdoor kitchen. We had no idea what the stain was or how it had occurred. I tried granite spray cleaners and scrubbed until I was worn out with no effect at all. A friend said that the stain looked like it might have been oil based but again nobody knew for sure. I saw this product on Amazon and it was well reviewed and I took a chance and ordered it.

I applied it as directed, waiting 2 1/2 days and removed it. The stain was gone! Scrubbing until I was exhausted did no good, but just applying this and waiting removed every bit of the stain. This stuff is great.

Two suggestions: First, the label says to stir it with a putty knife or such. You'll never get it well mixed that way. Buy a small paint mixer for your electric drill (for instance the Red Devil 4042 1 Gallon Paint Mixer), and use it. Be careful, start slow, and wear safety glasses when mixing. You will get a much better and more uniform mix.

Second, do not use a bristle brush to remove it, you'll be there all day. Use a scrub pad with a handle (such as the Star brite Scrub Pad W-Handle) and it will come right off. Start at an edge and work in. Once you get the powder off, you can use water and the brush to remove any powder residue that remains wedged in the surface variations of the granite.

I left a hot pink glow-in-the-dark (liquid inside/plastic outside) necklace on a two day-old light colored granite counter. The next morning I discovered it had leaked and left a hot pink "necklace" on the creamy granite. I was horrified! I tried making my own poultice from recipes on-line, but did not have confidence in my skills. I fed-exed this product...tried it asap...got a bit scared as it not only "spread out" but also the solvents spread two inches past the paste and seeped through the bottom of the granite. I was terrified I had just made my "small" problem very large. BUT: three days later, when I took the paste off, everything was gone, the stone was beautiful, and I was giddy with joy. We have just moved back into our home after being out six months for a house fire, and it just seems like everything new is dented or scratched or stained within the first 15 minutes of use. Thankfully....we can enjoy our counters again without looking at the nasty hot pink necklace imprint!
