5.0 out of 5 stars Best downtempo Mix album around, January 29, 2001
This review is from: Stoned...Chilled...Groove, astralpolemic mixed CD by Coldcut & strictley kev of DJ Food (Audio CD)
I've heard a lot of mix CDs and this by far is the best when it comes to downtempo music. There are two reasons for this. One, obviously, it's Coldcut and DJ Food behind the decks. Second, because it's DJ Food and Coldcut, they were able to clear the licenses for all of these sweet tracks which results in a pure DJ set (I mean, who's stupid enough to tell them "No, you can't use our track"). This mix was assembled live at LA's Louis the XIV back in '96 and still sounds fresh today. Timeless stuff. It begins with soft, quaint sounds, and features a sample from what sounds like an old sci-fi movie or an Orson Wells War of the Worlds radio broadcast. From there its a lesson in classy, heady, funky, chilled grooves. The mix is subtle and takes its time slowly building moods and breaking them back down and then taking the listener deeper and deeper. Great tracks from Fila Brazillia, Journeyman and Global Communication smooth things out. Languid, but punchy breakbeats keep the mind sharp, while smoky, glacial synths sculpt the imagination. Relaxing tones and dripping sounds percolate and fall. The best track here is the funky, dubby Freakpower track, "Freakpower Is Beautiful," which contains a funky-as-hell scratch-up of a great sample. I won't give much more away on that one, except that this is a track by Norman Cook of Fatboy Slim fame, and is in my opinion his best production ever. Of course, you can't find this track anywhere else but here. And the mix rounds out beautifully with Bandulu's "Run, Run, Run." A classic to the bone mix CD and the best release from the Coldcut/Ninja Tune/DJ Food school of thought. A criminally overlooked classic, if only that it brings the true vibe of the chilled-out underground to the presses without being diluted, over-marketed, or hampered by music licensing problems. Check your head.

5.0 out of 5 stars grab it quick, January 12, 2005
This review is from: Stoned...Chilled...Groove, astralpolemic mixed CD by Coldcut & strictley kev of DJ Food (Audio CD)
If you can get your hands on this album, don't hesitate to buy it. Best chill out soundtrack to your life. I've had a copy dubbed on tape for years and was so sad when I wore it out. The other positive reviews say everything else better than I can.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Press The Repeat And Enjoy The Retreat, October 5, 1999

I love ambient. I love being surrounded by mellow sound waves of electric bliss. All this I learned from this album which I bought a year ago. Sci-Fi, relaxed hip-hop and the rithym of just being here, there and everywhere, all mixing together into one is what this cd is all about. Not your typical Zen label cd, much more mellow. Like The Starseeds melding with DJ Spooky, (a very subliminal kick). Not for dancing, just relaxing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stoned..Chilled..Groove Review, September 2, 2011
This review is from: Stoned...Chilled...Groove, astralpolemic mixed CD by Coldcut & strictley kev of DJ Food (Audio CD)
Not every song is 1st rate but I gave this cd 5 stars because of 4 songs that are absolutely the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard. I listen to them everyday. They are: Latneiro, Run, Run, Run, Maiden Voyage and Funk In The Fridge. A Zed And 2 L's is a 4 star song. The rest are 3/2/1 star songs. Personally I never listen to the last ones I mentioned. The music is lush, mystical, ethereal, rare, and beautiful. Coldcut uses a lot of reverb on all the songs, creating a very deep, epic sound. Latneiro makes me feel like a million bucks everytime I listen to it. It features strings, synth pads and a sampled voice... Run, Run, Run is a Hugh Mandell cover I think which is very cool. It's got a choir sound and a synth pad sound and also has a sampled voice saying Run, Run, Run, Revolution Will Come. Drums too. Maiden Voyage is good. It's got a couple synth pad sounds making 2 different melodies with drums behind them. Funk in the fridge is great. It's got a sampled voice with a synth pad, drums, and a saxophone sound in it. There you have it. My review on Stoned..Chilled...Groove.

5.0 out of 5 stars best chill cd PERIOD, April 26, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Stoned...Chilled...Groove, astralpolemic mixed CD by Coldcut & strictley kev of DJ Food (Audio CD)
I bought this cd when it first came out, I think in '96. It is still on my top 10 of all time greats today. A few years ago my copy was sounding rough, so I thought I would search out a new copy. Well it was extremely hard. There were none. New or used. So I searched some more. Finally, I found one copy in New York City. One copy folks. I paid $60.00! I would pay that 100 times over if I had to. So worth it! (Luckily its stored in my computer now)
Hands down the absolute best chill cd EVER!

I've been turned on to this CD almost since the year that it came out. I've listened to it a hundred times at least, and it's always as good as the first time.

This is music from the relatively early trip-hop/ambient/down-tempo house music era. But even people who wouldn't normally seek out that kind of music have loved this CD when I've played it for them. You can really get lost in this CD's world, no matter what your state of mind.

As you can see by the prices that these old originals are going for, it's a real collector's item. But don't think of it as spending $40.00 for a single CD. Think of it as spending $40.00 for one GREAT CD, unlike any you'll ever own...versus owning 4 mediocre CD's for the same price. It's really that good.

5.0 out of 5 stars wish i could give it more than 5 stars, June 16, 2006
This review is from: Stoned...Chilled...Groove, astralpolemic mixed CD by Coldcut & strictley kev of DJ Food (Audio CD)
well, this is it. stoned chilled groove is one of the most beautiful, soothing, grooving and moving piece of artwork i have ever had the pleasure of hearing and owning. the first time i heard track 1 in a friends car, i knew i had to get this. this is not fast tencho beats like you would expect from dj food or dj coldcuts other work. it is warm, flowing, ethereal, organic and feels natural instead of feeling forced. just like the album implies.. this is stoned, chilled groove. it's what you would want to listen to on a cool moonlit night when you're all alone or with a couple friends, or perhaps driving down a country road with the windows rolled down. this is not a dance album. it's an experience that demands you to actually listen to it instead of merely "hearing" it. the only bummer is that i haven't been able to find another food/coldcut/ninja tunes album that sounds even remotely like this one. this is the best electronica album i have ever heard and will probably ever hear. i suggest getting this if you can get your hands on it. you won't be dissapointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Original chill, March 14, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Stoned...Chilled...Groove, astralpolemic mixed CD by Coldcut & strictley kev of DJ Food (Audio CD)
More than anything else, I enjoy this album because it features tracks which are not common on other "chill out" compilations. This arguably is the best example of the type of music played in the "chill out lounges" in England's biggest clubs. The album is perhaps a little heavy-handed on the spoken-word samples and there is, in fact, one track which I skip (I won't mention which one). That said, it's a good spin.
