Editorial Reviews

Beau Brummels vocalist Sal Valentino turned aside from the roots-rock of the band’s last two albums in favor of the bluesy, psychedelic soul (e.g. Cold Blood, Janis) that predominated in the Bay Area at the end of the ’60s with this group, which boasted no less than four female vocalists (Annie Sampson’s wailing vocals give Janis a run for her money here)! Future Starship member Pete Sears and guitar hero Tim Barnes rounded out probably the single hottest live band in the San Francisco scene at the time, best know for its performances during the last days of the Fillmore and on the Medicine Ball Caravan tour and film. This debut record came out in 1971, and it has definitely got the feel of the time and place (and what a time and place!)—includes 'Looking for You; Great Changes Since I’ve Been Born; the Kinks’ Rainy Day in June; Added Attraction (Come See Me); Dreaming Man; Stroke Stand; Bad News; Don’t Waste My Time; Colonel Chicken Fry', and 'Brand New Start'.! A 'Collectors’ Choice Music' exclusive!

4.0 out of 5 stars It's about time.......... June 21, 2004
Format:Audio CD
Finally this wonderfully creative band from the late 60's and early 70's gets their debut album released on cd. Featuring great vocals from Sal Valentino, Anne Sampson and Tim barnes just to name a few, Stoneground cut thru rock, blues and soul genres with ease. From the opening song, Looking for You, it's obvious this was not your ordinary band. Popular for the most part on the west coast, Stoneground had a solid following and built it's reputation on it's live shows. Boosting as many as ten to eleven members at a time, Stoneground's raw infectious brand of rock grabs the listener with it's varied styles and vocals. This album holds up remarkably well from it's first recording in 1971. To get the live experience, check out Stoneground Live, a very well recorded show from the early 70's.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a good day! August 2, 2004
By TiggerD
Format:Audio CD
My parents played this album a lot when my sister and I were just little kids. Strangely enough, it's one of the few artists they listened to which we enjoyed also. The album was played so many times that there are specific scratches that we expect to hear that go along with "favorite songs". My dad made tapes of the album (because we couldn't find copies) and my sister and I still play them in our car today. Now our kids are hooked on the songs. Every now and then we do a search on the various websites, hoping against hope, the album will be turned into a CD. I don't know that this review says much about the actual music - take a listen for yourself - but, I think it says a lot for the generational appeal.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Legendary Band August 28, 2005
By J. Fiet
Format:Audio CD
Stoneground was legendary as a touring group in the early 70s operating mostly on the West Coast. They never made it to Vegas but had a solid reputation amongst progressive music lovers here.I finally got to see them in Carson City,NV as part of an all day show that also featured Elvin Bishop,Country Joe McDonald and Sun Ra.This album reflects their unique sound and the excitement I saw that night.

5.0 out of 5 stars Several Lead Vocalists on a debut album... November 14, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
1971 - a magical year of music from the Bay Area. With the breakup of the Beau Brummels we find Sal Valentino joined with Lynne Hughes former lead singer from Tongue and Groove and a former part time member of the Charlatans. Stoneground features several lead vocalists: Annie Sampson, Lynne Hughes, Deirdre LaPorte, Tim Barnes, Luther Bildt, and Sal Valentino, a feat that is rarely used in any group, but with Stoneground you feel like you have been placed in the center of a great party with many friends sharing their music with you. If you are serious about having a good time I recommend this album to you, it always makes me smile when I listen to it.
