Gr 2-4--This fine tale is set on Lake Ontario in the early 1900s. Because of the growing popularity of inland quarries, the Hannah May, a schooner that rakes the lake bottom for rock and stone to be used for building materials, is soon to make its last voyage. Matthew is finally allowed to go on the ship with his father and the crew to experience a stonehooking expedition while it is still possible. He watches the men poling a small scow away from the schooner to the shallows, raking the heavy stones, and bringing them back to the schooner's hold. A sudden storm arises, and Matthew ties himself to the mast and sights for land, thus doing his part. The story is well told, with details that give historical information. The dramatic paintings are full of motion and the wonderful shades of the sea. The storm takes readers right into the ship to experience the awesome, angry waves. The facial expressions of father and son show their strong feelings for one another. This piece of nautical history stands on its own as a story, as well as serving as a beautiful memorial of a trade that is unfamiliar to many.
