In this far-fetched yarn, better suited to an Indiana Jones movie than contemporary fiction, Bob Harlow, a down-and-out professor at the University of Mary in North Dakota, brings a curse down on himself and his family by stealing sacred mani stones from a religious and archeological site in Tibet. Overwhelmed by his misfortunes and by the perilous medical condition of his daughter, Bob travels back to Tibet with the only available companion, redneck mechanic Vern Cugnet, a perfect boor. Braving many difficulties, the two attempt to return the mani stones to their original site. Neither mystery, thriller, nor literary work, this novel is most notable for its information on Tibetan Buddhism and the region's contemporary political troubles with China; its best moments concern westerners' inability to comprehend Tibetan ways. It's never quite clear, even at the end, however, just what Mitchell ( Wandering Rafferty ) is trying to say.

Mitchell, a multifaceted Canadian professor, has taught and traveled extensively in China. In this novel, Bob Harlow, a North Dakota college teacher, struggles on a quest through China, India, and Nepal. At the end of a teaching assignment, Bob, along with his wife and daughter, travel to the remote "place of the Dead" in Tibet. They pick up two mani stones (engraved funeral markers) as souvenirs. Upon their return home, their lives become tangled in a series of mishaps, and they reach the conclusion that the stones are cursed. Bob vows to lift the curse by returning the stones to Tibet, and, with the help of a naive garage mechanic, Vern Cugnet, ventures forth. This fast-paced mystical journey is sprinkled with holy hermits, meetings with the Dalai Lama, border riots, duels with demons, and terrors of missing the World Series. It is a great tale of enlightenment.

Modern fairytale,

My brother in law loaned me this novel for a weekend visit. I finished it in 2 days. It helps to know of some Buddhist notions, but the story also gives historical commentary, human soap opera, Buddhist concepts, and plain, laugh out loud travelogue. Rather than rehash the story, I favor the Literary Journal summary. Have fun with this one and learn a few things along the way.
