5.0 out of 5 stars One of my absolute favorite books, January 7, 2012
By
RansomPress (Bogotá, Colombia) - See all my reviews
This is one of my absolute favorite books, ever. I just can't do it justice in a review, because what I love so much about it is the "flavor" or the "essence" of the book. My explaining it would ruin it.

Published in 1955 (But I don't know when the story is supposed to take place) This is a Missionary story that is like no other, told by the missionary lady, but through the eyes of the indigenous people. Now I have spoiled it, because you will think one thing, something different. The only thing to do now is to write a portion of the beginning for you.

Chapter One - A Stone is Quarried
A small figure was toiling through the orange mud of the long mountain road. In the canyon where human beings, so undernourished, mature slowly, she looked only about ten or twelve years of age, though she was fifteen. The day was warm and the big load of firewood in the basket on her back was heavy, so she paused to rest it on a rock that jutted out of the road bank. Pulling out the end of her dark blue turban, she wiped the perspiration from her face. Then as she tucked it back in place her eye caught a glimpse of another figure coming up the road behind her. Tall, young, unburdened, he was swinging over the ground with a graceful lilt which would soon overtake her.
Born-on-the-Road. The little girl murmured his name to herself. He must be home for the weekend from Bible school. Then as she watched the gloss of his carefully groomed curly black hair, she thought within herself, I'll take another look when he has passed. A general favorite was Born-on-the-Road. But as the young Bible student swung up to the little wood-carrier he stopped to talk.

No, what I really like is the book in its entirety, so giving you a portion is really not going to do it at all.
