Dissapointing but still a good story, July 20, 1999

This review is from: The Stones of Stiga:: A Novel of Shunlar (Shunlar Chronicles) (Mass Market Paperback)
I was greatly disappointed with Carol Heller's The Stones of Stiga. It was a good book and many questions were answered, but the excitement and finesse of her earlier books was missing. The story has interesting twists and turns but it didn't pull the reader in and keep the interest as well as the first two books. The reason for my dislike may be from a tired mind, but upon finishing this book I felt as if the author was ending a trilogy, not leaving a suficient opening for the next book of the chronical. It was almost as if the author has totally lost interest in Shunlar. I'm not saying that the story was bad; in fact there were many points when I was very pleased, but the fact remains that certain happenings of the book were predictable. I felt that there were certain sub-polts that weren't very relavent except to explain certain elements, and that some characters were over-played, while others had very little to do with the story. This book was partly disappointing but mostly I was delightfully pleased. Carol Heller has created a character who is very independant, and is a hero for anybody. I will be pleased to see what happens in the future books; this book may have been a disappointment, but I'm hoping it's only a minor setback.
