For those who don't know, Stones Throw is an independent record label, founded in 1996 by Bay Area DJ/producer, Peanut Butter Wolf. In the 11 years of its existence, it has become one of the most respected and influential independent hip hop labels in the country. Think that I'm overstating the point? Take a look at their catalog of releases: albums from Madlib (and all of his various identities), instrumentals from Dilla (undeniably one of the greatest hip hop producers of all time ... with one of the best albums of 06), as well as the many rare (and educational) Funk re-issues ... which I think are among the label's strongest releases. Now I'm overstating the point? Stones Throw Ten Years compiles 25 of the best releases of the last 10 years. The label has done an excellent job of capturing the diversity of their catalog - hip hop, funk, disco, experimental electro-soul/jazz - to give listeners insight into some of the best music of the past decade and beyond (just in case they were living on the moon). As a Berkeley native and a child of the 90's, I can't stress the influence of Stones Throw music (the Funk re-issues in particular) on my own development as a DJ, record weasel, and producer. Everyone should own a copy of this album.
