A History in the Whirlwind: The Rolling Stones’ 50th Anniversary

By Anthony DeCurtis

I have always liked the Rolling Stones. Indeed, as a young man I was an avid fan. In fact, the night they appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show I was the young lad that grabbed Brian Jones' arm, thus saving him from being pushed through the glass door as the band were being beseiged by fans. The Stones, Beatles, Kinks and the Animals were my idols. That, my friends, is why it pains me to see the Stones "new" package. Are they kidding? This is akin to the earliest settlers receiving beads and et cetera in exchange for Manhattan Island, isn't it? Where's the value in this package? It appears the Rolling Stones now aim to become "the greatest Rock and Roll Hucksters in the world and their once saucy logo a now a useful symbol with which to taunt their fans.
