Book Description

Winner of the Civil War Society's Seal of Approval
Winner of the Michael Shaara Award for Civil War Fiction

Stonewall’s Gold is an adventure story for readers of all ages in the classic tradition of Treasure Island and The Red Badge of Courage. Combining a fascinating and gripping narrative with a portrait of life in the Civil War–era South, it is also the moving story of a boy on the edge of manhood, taking on difficult challenges that force him to confront the world for the first time.

The year of 1864 is a difficult time to be living in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia. The Civil War is drawing to a close and, under the orders of General Sheridan, Union troops have laid waste to the countryside. Against this bleak backdrop, Jamie Lockhart’s mother takes on a boarder to help her eke out a living until her husband returns from the war.

Soon, someone begins desecrating local soldier’s graves, and Jamie, an intrepid fifteen-year-old, discovers that their boarder is the culprit. Confronted, the boarder assaults Jamie’s mother; defending her, Jamie kills him. In his personal effects Jamie discovers the item he was looking for in the graveyard, a cryptic map to Stonewall’s gold. Thus begins Jamie’s quest.

Along the way, Jamie is faced with the best and the worst in human nature, and meets a young girl and falls in love for the first time. He becomes privy to the hidden politics behind the war when he stumbles upon escaped slaves on the Underground Railroad, and he is also forced to confront the ugly realities of war and the absurdity of the lost cause in the final days of the conflict.

A ripping adventure yarn, a moving coming-of-age tale, and a fascinating portrait of the difficulty of life in the Appalachians at the end of the Civil War, Stonewall’s Gold is a compelling novel that is certain to appeal to teacher and student alike.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Echoing The Red Badge of Courage, Treasure Island and Morte D'Arthur, this tenderly rendered first novel, which takes the form of a manuscript "discovered in the archives of the Rockingham County courthouse in Harrisonburg, VA," irresistibly combines the classic motifs of Civil War, buried treasure and romantic heroism. With money running out and her husband gone to fight under General Lee during the final winter of the Civil War, 15-year-old Jamie Lockhart's mother is forced to take an ominous-looking boarder into their war-ravaged home in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. Jamie is driven to kill the blackguard to save his mother from rape, and in the dead man's belongings they find a crude, encrypted map marking "the Mouth of the Devil" as the site of buried gold. On his way to consult a distant tavern owner about the map's legend, Jamie is saved from a thieving, gargantuan deserter by Major de Monfort, a one-armed, knife-throwing Cajun. Six of the giant's cronies pursue Jamie, but he insists on going behind Yankee lines to find the treasure; the Major leaves him, advising the boy to commit the map to memory and destroy it. Seized by the renegade gang, Jamie escapes with Katharine Dandridge, the feisty daughter of an elderly plantation owner murdered by the thugs. Hounded through raging storms by the murderous band, the pair finally reunite with de Monfort, and the trio trudges on in search of the gold. Told by young Jamie, Mrazek's story possesses a compelling narrative drive. His sense of landscape is expert and his cast of heroes and villains is complete, down to a horse, Jamie's Jupiter. Mrazek's exceptional coming-of-age tale will equally delight young adult and adult readers. Author tour. (Jan.) From School Library Journal

YA-In the last winter of the Civil War, 15-year-old Jamie Lockhart kills a man who attempted to rape his mother, and finds in the dead man's tobacco pouch a small piece of cloth that looks like a crude map. Searching for clues about it, Jamie hears the words "Stonewall Jackson's gold" and is off on a far-fetched adventure-to seek the treasure buried behind enemy lines and take it to Richmond, VA, where his father is fighting with Robert E. Lee. Jamie is captured by a desperate band of men who, knowing he has knowledge of the gold's whereabouts, take him with them to search for it. The renegades take shelter at a large estate, killing its owner. The owner's daughter is determined to avenge her father's death and becomes Jamie's ally and friend, and together they plot to escape and find the gold on their own. Aided by a mysterious one-armed major, they ultimately find the gold. Only when they are on their way to Richmond with it, does Jamie find that the major has another destination in mind. This is more than a fast-paced adventure story; it is also a tale of the horrors of war, and of the last days of the Confederacy.

5.0 out of 5 stars 1999 MICHAEL SHAARA AWARD FOR CIVIL WAR FICTION WINNER, August 31, 2000
I recently learned that this book won the 1999 Michael Shaara Award for Civil War Fiction awarded by Louisiana State University. I don't know what books it competed against, but this one is clearly a winner.

I read this book some time ago and will re-read it soon. What I liked best was the way the two main characters related to each other to achieve their goal. A young 15 year old still fighting for the south and a tough young 18 year old girl, ala Scarlet O'Hara AFTER the war ("I'll never go hungry again!") but more likable. If you're looking for a detailed book about the civil war, this is not it. If your looking for some new insight into Stonewall Jackson or some secret about why the south lost, this is not it. In fact, the novel succeeds because it is more a "period piece", an action story of ordinary people which just happened to take place in the 1860s.

It is a book for all ages and I would especially encourage women, young and old, to read it as Kathleen is a strong willed heroine that I was happy to read about.

Thank you for evaluating my review.

This exceptionally well written story had me on the edge of my seat from one chapter to the next! The main character has some great adventures in the midst of a wonderful depiction of the Civil War. I passed this book along to my 14 year old. It is very easy reading and is appropriate for any age. If your homeschooler is studying the Civil War, I would recommend "Stonewall's Gold" as worthwhile supplemental reading. The author is very good at keeping the plot moving and exciting. Definitely add this book to your list of good reads for you and your family.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book will last for a long time., October 24, 1999
By A Customer
I've seen reviews of this book comparing it to Cold Mountain. It is nothing like Cold Mountain, which has very little to do with the Civil War. Cold Mountain could just as easily be about the Russian front in WWII. It's also very lyrical, a true poet's book. Stonewall's Gold truly brings alive the Civil War as I believe it must have been at that time and place. Its writing style is very spare with a wonderful sense of mood, weather, and evocative cinematic imagery. Personally, I can't think of a better Civil War novel since The Killer Angels. The writer also doesn't take sides. This could be a classic American movie if it is done well.
