5.0 out of 5 stars What a super story.
I read this book at 32, and I just loved it. I found the writer's style to be lovely, almost poetic at times. I appreciated the fact that the main character had some problems in her life (like her absent mother) but she had people to care for her, and she works through problems and comes out all right. The ghost story aspect was never used solely for scares or horror...

3.0 out of 5 stars Smartly written, gently suspenseful
I've heard terrific things about the late Pam Conrad's novels, so I introduced myself to her with Stonewords. The story wasn't as richly textured as the author's writing style, but this is surely a title that any ghost story fan will appreciate.

Thank you, Ms. Conrad.

I would definitely recomend this book to anyone who likes stories about ghosts. It is one of my all time favorite books. I like how the author describes what is going on in the book. I can read the book and seemm like it is real. Like it is really happening. I can escape the real world when I read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book My Middle School Teacher Read 2 Us, April 14, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Stonewords: A Ghost Story (Harper Trophy Books) (Paperback)
My 4th grade teacher read this to us when I was a child years ago. My parents bought me a copy because I loved the book. But, sadly lost it along the way to adulthood. I'm now a mother of 2 girls and am buying books to build a library for them. I thought of this one and got it and have read it over and over again. I hope it survives us. lol

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning!, March 23, 2010
This review is from: Stonewords: A Ghost Story (Harper Trophy Books) (Paperback)
This is a book that is beautiful and sad and scary all at the same time. Zoe has a best friend and she is a ghost. SOmething terrible happened years before and Zoe has to help her friend figure it out before its too late. This book terrified and impressed me when I was younger and today it is a treasured part of my book collection. The prose is gorgeous and the story is timeless

This is one of those books I read as a child that stuck with me forever. I still cite it as one of my favorite books of all time. I still have it on my book shelf and am hoping that my son will one day enjoy it too. I highly recommend it for any child who likes to read ghost stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kayla's review, October 24, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Stonewords: A Ghost Story (Harper Trophy Books) (Paperback)
This book is about a girl who has to stay with her grandparents, because her mom is a little crazy. The girl's name is Zoe and one day her grandpa told her she could clean up the old play house on the front porch. When she's doing that she sees a girl under the table and she becomes friends with this girl and her name is Zoe Louise. Zoe Louise is a ghost of a little girl who's house used to be the house Zoe now lives in. Every time Zoe Louise gets mad she runs off and goes into the door at the base of the back stairway and she vanishes into her own world back in time and one day she gets Zoe to come with her. I thought this book was amazing it just grabed at my attention. I couldn't put it down for one second.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Book for Children, February 21, 2005
This review is from: Stonewords: A Ghost Story (Harper Trophy Books) (Paperback)
I vividly remember this book even though I read it when I was about eight or nine years old, and I remember it was the first book I ever cried about after finishing it. I just didn't want the story to end because I felt that I had grown so close to the characters. A book has to be really magical for me to cry about it, and this story really touched my heart.
