5.0 out of 5 stars "A New Sound For Streisand"
Barbra Streisand released two albums in 1971, "Barbra Joan Streisand" and this jewel "Stoney End". With "Stoney End" Barbra wanted to move into a new direction with her music. She wanted to conquer the pop industry so she recorded a series of songs that would appeal to this particular audience. The result was this album that went all the way into Billboard's Top 10, her...

1.0 out of 5 stars Not getting it
As in the awful "BJS" album, the singer tries to find out what all the fuss is about in the youth market. The result sounds like a parody album. On some tracks, it sounds like a bad Karaoke performance.
In particular, "Free the People" is painful, especially when compared with the Delaney and Bonnie original. Bonnie Bramlett, as idiosyncratic a singer as...

The result was this album that went all the way into Billboard's Top 10, her first in over 5 years. The album would spawn 2 hit singles, the title track and "Time and Love". Other highlights are "I Don't Know Where I Stand", Gordon Lightfoot's "If You Could Read My Mind", and "I'll Be Home". "Stoney End" proved to be very successful for Streisand, garnering her another platinum album selling over 1.5 million copies.

This was "Funny Girl's" first venture into rock and she showed the world she could.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Barbra's best albums, May 19, 2011
This review is from: Stoney End (Audio CD)
This was my first Barbra Streisand album, back in my vinyl days, and having disposed of my vinyl copy, I eventually bought it again on CD. It still sounds as good as ever. Many of the songs are by familiar songwriters. Laura Nyro contributed three songs including the title track that inspired the bleak album cover, while Randy Newman contributed two.

Elsewhere on the album, Barbra recorded excellent covers of If you could read my mind (Gordon Lightfoot) and I don't know where I stand (Joni Mitchell). Another great song is Maybe, written by Harry Nilsson. Great songwriter that he was, his biggest hits were covers of other people's songs.

Barbra has recorded many fine albums, but this one is certainly among the best as far as I'm concerned.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stoney End, December 11, 2011

Barbra in your Concert Album, people wanted to hear Stoney End, you sang a short version. But, I guess we all love it, don't know what Stoney End is either, as you said, but it has a beat and I think it is one of my favorites.

5.0 out of 5 stars Barbra singing Pop............., October 3, 2011

This is another classic Barbra Streisand album. She put her stamp on popular music at that time. Although I prefer Barbra's classic jazz style, this is a nice change of pace.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Streisand Fan, January 6, 2009
This review is from: Stoney End (Audio CD)
I've been a HARD-CORE fan of Barbra since the late 70's. I own her entire collection, first on vinyl, now on CD! Never had the privelege of seeing her live, yet! I've ALWAYS enjoyed her voice! DEFINATELY THE VOICE OF THE 20th CENTURY!

Bonnie Bramlett, as idiosyncratic a singer as she is, still shows much better range than the famous Barbara.
Likewise, the Randy Newman covers are vapidly done, with none of the menace or energy that Randy brings to his songs.
This album is basically a form of Muzak. Live high energy music filtered and sanitized for the housefrau set.
Barbara sounds much better when she sticks to corn and schmaltz.
Fer cryin out loud, this piece of crap was in stores RIGHT NEXT TO THE ORIGINALS!

Do yourself a favor and listen to the originals. If you can stand her versions, you might find something new to enjoy as well!
