This is actually one of my favorite DMM albums. I think it shows a more "grown-up" side of the Philly quartet. 3.0 out of 5 stars Kind of sad
This album was a disappointment for me and, along with Not RIchard, But Dick, ties for the DM's worst efforts. Even Joe Jack Talcum stated that making this album was a big mistake. It's easy to see that the band ran out of gas on these last two releases. Peter Bazooka, the only song they made a video for, is only average when looking at the complete library of DM...

This is actually one of my favorite DMM albums. I think it shows a more "grown-up" side of the Philly quartet. They ponder some of life's more serious aspects, at the same time, prove they haven't lost their sense of humor. They've definitely improved musically and lyrically and the difference is obvious in this recording. Eariler albums contained songs that seemed to be more of a collection of 45 to 90-second rants, whereas this album contains longer more melodic tunes. Joe and Rodney seem to split the vocal duties a great deal on this one so you get a good dose of both guys lyrical stylings. Maybe not great for a new DMM fan, but a definite must-have for a seasoned veteran.

It's easy to see that the band ran out of gas on these last two releases. Peter Bazooka, the only song they made a video for, is only average when looking at the complete library of DM songs. It's too bad they had to end this way. I give it 3 stars simply because it IS the Dead Milkmen. I don't knock this album as being bad, but as far DM goes, it's only average at best.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the milkmen's strongest albums!, July 6, 2001

I don't understand the bad publicity surrounding this album; it is funny, well-paced, and musical. In fact, I'd argue that this is their strongest release next to Metaphysical Grafitti & Not Richard But Dick, and their strongest in terms of sheer musicality. If you are a teeny-bopper that likes raw punk, then you won't like this album; if you are someone who can appreciate the evolution and maturation of a band over the years, then this album is for you. "Peter Bazooka" remains one of the cleverest Dead Milkmen tracks ever, and Khrissy, I can't stay awake, and Big Deal are amazing in their own right. Don't let the sour-pusses deter you from a great album; This is one I've listened to at least 50 times all the way through - there is a lot of good stuff here, for those able to realize that the Dead Milkmen are more than a angsty-punk band.

5.0 out of 5 stars The misunderstood cheesecake, January 16, 2000

This album IS great. Throughout the years, people have tried to tell me that this album is nothing compared to the dead milkmen's older material. They are wrong. The music that is portrayed in this album reflects thier musical influence at the time. Do we really want to hear another band of thirty year old men trying to sing the way they did in high school? No! This album is great. It has all the elements that a fan would want. However, if you are new to the dead milkmen, I would recomend an older milkmen album, or a collection cd(cream of the crop or death rides a pale cow).

3.0 out of 5 stars Offbeat fun, May 16, 1998
This review is from: Stoney's Extra Stout (Pig) (Audio CD)
From a garage band that has near cult status in the Philadelphia area. I really like this album more than a 6 rating would lead you to believe. It's just that the music is bad, the lyrics are bad, the singing is bad. But somehow, put all together it's hilarious and a lot of fun to listen to. "I'm Flying Away" is sung so badly with such passion that I can't keep from laughing out loud. These guys have a great sense of humor in song. "The Blues Song" is another jewel. A commentary on how far blues music has strayed from it's roots. "The Man Who Rides The Bus", perfect example of how hard it is to place this band. Is it social satire, or just a joke? "Don't Deny Your Inner Child", tired of the new age stuff? This sort of puts it in perspective. "When I Get To Heaven", deep ponderings on religion. Very funny. "I Can't Stay Awake", physical dilemma. "Chaos Theory", ever wonder where skinheads come from? "Khrissy", drug addiction? "Like To Be Alone" another song in the vein of "I'm Flying Away". "Big Deal" puts all of life into perspective. It's really enjoyable with a lot of humor.

4.0 out of 5 stars i wouldn't start here, but...., July 17, 2007
This review is from: Stoney's Extra Stout (Pig) (Audio CD)
this is where i'm conflicted. some people, (even alleged band members) wished they had preserved their legacy of greatness by ending w/ NRBD. i can understand their point, but this is my favorite band, and i miss them so much i'm starting to wander whether i would be happier if they had soldiered on, even if the albums suffered a little as a whole. after all, there would be at least a couple great songs on future records, and that's better than nothing, right? true, now we have projects like BURN WITCH BURN, Butterfly Joe, Cheesies, Low Budgets, etc., and they are all great in their own right. But i'm missing that Talcum/Anonymous dichotomy. To illustrate my point, this probably is my least favorite DM album, i particularly think the middle is kind of weak, but "I can't stay awake" is one of the most beautiful melodies Joe's ever recorded, and "the Blues Song" had me laughing out loud the first time i heard it, like so many vintage DM songs. So you know what? I think i'd gladly put up w/ 5 "Don't deny your child"'s for one of those gems. It's a tough, touchy thing; i'm sure it wouldn't be the same w/out Dave, but maybe, just maybe...maybe i'm being greedy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Album, March 17, 2007
This review is from: Stoney's Extra Stout (Pig) (Audio CD)
This is one of my favorite CDs by the Dead Milkmen, and shows they've come a long ways from their 80's smartassedness and gotten better. The music is minimal but taut, the band plays together like a single unit, something the Dead Milkmen have always been strong with, but here it's perfectly balanced and well produced. The lyrics are among their best. If you're simply looking for what the Dead Milkmen were typecast as then look elsewhere, but if you're looking for some highly enjoyable music then give this a listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great album, November 26, 2003

This was the last real studio album from the Dead Milkmen (unless the gods bless their fans and these guys who write so well together get back together) and it's a good one...one of their best. Their later albums grew less punk and even more humorous. Here the Dead Milkmen's comic genius works on many different levels that'll bring many smiles.

If you're looking for great DM albums, skip the compilations and go for: Bucky Fellini, Beelzebubba, Metaphysical Graffiti, Not Richard, But Dick and Stoney's Extra Stout.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dissapoinment, November 27, 1999

As a long time fan of The Dead Milkmen, I was really disappointed by this release. Stoney's Extra Stout does contain some incredibly solid, and hilarious tracks, but not like the old days. I guess everyone needs to re-invent their sound after awhile, but I wish The Dead Milkmen had stayed with their Punk roots. Although this album is fairly good, it by no means compares to their earlier albums. If your a fan of these old-school, Philly kids like myself, then it is a must have. However, if your merely looking for a new sound, I suggest one of The Dead Milkmen's other albums.

The only bad Dead Milkmen album. Peter Bazooka is an okay song but that one song isn't enough for me to give this thing more than one star. Try Beelzebubba or Metaphysical Grafitti first if you're new to DM. And If you're a Dead Milkmen fan and haven't heard this album yet then I suggest keeping it that way. It's boring.
